MONTREAL ? You wouldn?t know it from watching Rafael Nadal?s overwhelming destruction of Milos Raonic ySunday ? but tennis in this country has come a long way in the past seven years.
That?s since Louis Borfiga took over the high-performance job at Tennis Canada back in 2006. The past week has since the ultimate vindication of that move, with Raonic and Vasek Pospisil meeting in one semi-final of the men?s draw here in Montreal while Westmount teenager Eugenie Bouchard had another strong performance before running into Petra Kvitova in Toronto.
It?s a highwater mark for tennis in this country and it?s been a long time coming. It?s also a welcome change from the annual spate of stories telling us that Aleksandra Wozniak was really, truly ready at last to make a breakthrough.
This time, the breakthrough is real and it?s coming in numbers to make any Canadian proud.
Look at tennis south of the border ? where no American male is ranked in the top 20 and the women?s side pretty much comes down to Serena Williams and hope for Sloane Stephens ? and you have to feel that Tennis Canada is doing something right.
Raonic will be in the top 10, Pospisil around 40th ? and Filip Peliwo (who made some noise this week himself) is on the way.
If you tuned in late and saw only Nadal?s clinical dissection of Raonic yesterday, you could be forgiven for thinking that tennis in this country is pretty much where it?s always been. I?m not a big fan of Raonic?s game ? he?s too one-dimensional, relying on that big 215-kilometre serve, too much like a big awkward puppy out there ? but there?s no denying his success.
Raonic on Sunday became the first Canadian since 1958 to play in a Rogers Cup/Canadian Open final. That and the move into the Top 10 made it a splendid week for him.
Like most of the other men on the ATP tour, Raonic is no threat to the top four when they?re on their game. He might move up another notch or two but he is a long, long way from being able to beat a healthy Nadal.
But there are bigger and better things coming. Seeing the kids in the crowd pulling for Raonic yesterday, you couldn?t help thinking that this is the sort of thing that becomes contagious. The kids see their heroes out there, they want to emulate them ? and the next thing you know, you?re a tennis power.
Losing ugly: You?ve heard of winning ugly? Well, the Alouettes are losing ugly. We?re six games into the CFL season and they?ve got enough video for a three-hour lowlight reel showing what has gone wrong.
Fumbles, dropped passes, missed tackles ? it?s like a clown show came to town to replace the once vaunted Als.
Off one hideous loss to the Argos, it appears that firing Dan Hawkins didn?t help a bit. Jim Popp wasn?t responsible for all those fumbles, dropped passes and missed tackles ? but he is responsible for the way this team is run.
I?m not a coaching genius but there is one thing I know: Players need to understand very clearly who?s in charge. When Popp fired Hawkins, he let offensive co-ordinator Mike Miller keep his title, although he was technically demoted.
So Doug Berry is in charge of the offence while Miller is the offensive coordinator? Huh? For the Argos game, Miller flanked Popp on the sidelines while Berry supposedly called the plays from up above.
Berry might have been in quarterback Anthony Calvillo?s ear all night long ? but Miller was in Popp?s ear. So who?s in charge? Berry? Miller? Popp? Calvillo? Does anyone know? Who?s on first?
I dunno. Maybe MarcTrestman could call the plays from Chicago?
Somebody needs to give those metricians a sabre: Couldn?t believe my eyes yesterday when I saw a column?Sunday saying that the Angels' Mike Trout might deserve the MVP ahead of Miguel Cabrera.

Look back: Thanks to a string of marquee recruiting classes and Florida State's elite national-contender history, Jimbo Fisher has faced extraordinarily high expectations in Tallahassee. During the 2012 season, the Seminoles won their first ACC championship since 2005 and first Orange Bowl since 2000. However, it still was viewed as a bit of a disappointment by some vocal FSU fans who expected to be national-championship contenders.
The Seminoles raced out to a 5-0 start, but they got limited praise because their schedule was viewed as especially weak compared to other programs.
FSU then suffered what has become a troubling tradition, suffering a loss against a less talented team it was favored to beat. Florida State lost 17-16 at NC State.
The Seminoles bounced back to win five consecutive games and clinch a spot in the ACC Championship Game.
Many figured FSU's elite defense would have no trouble smothering rival Florida's tepid offense, but the Gators scored a surprising 37-26 win over the Seminoles in Tallahassee to close out the regular season.
FSU headed to the ACC title game for an underwhelming matchup against Georgia Tech, a team that was sent to the game after Miami and North Carolina were kept out of the contest thanks to NCAA infractions. The Seminoles had to rally to beat the surprisingly tough Yellow Jackets 21-15 to claim the championship and a trip to the Orange Bowl.
The Seminoles then faced off with the nation's top underdog, Mid-American Conference champion Northern Illinois. FSU had no trouble roughing up NIU, rolling to a 31-10 win.

By BEN HARTMAN, The Jerusalem Post ? ?A financial dispute between two lovers was the motive behind the murder and decapitation and dismemberment of a Romanian foreign worker?found stuffed inside a suitcase?in south Tel Aviv on Saturday.
The alleged murderer, Turkish citizen Ayden Demiran, 50, was arrested on Tuesday afternoon a few hours before he was set to board a flight to Turkey, police said. Head of the special investigative unit, Officer Sharon Malkah, said police arrested Demiran in the village of Kfar Qassem in the Triangle, where he was known to stay when he wasn?t in Tel Aviv. Under questioning, he reportedly confessed to the crime and was taken by officers to perform a re-enactment of the crime. Demiran has been living in Israel for at least 18 months, where he was employed as a construction worker, Malkah said.
At the moment they have not determined if he acted alone, but that contrary to reports in the Romanian media, only one arrest has been made.
The woman, 45-year-old Ilona Denise of Romania, worked in Israel as a care-taker in recent years, first in Haifa and then later in Tel Aviv. Police said. She is from the town of Valea lui Mihai in Bihor County in western Transylvania, where her daughter Erika is a Hungarian language teacher, according to a Romanian journalist who spoke to the Jerusalem Post on Wednesday. Denise initially came to Israel with a legal work permit in 2004, but the visa had expired at some point before her murder, complicating her ability to find a permanent place of employment.
Her body was identified already on Saturday, due to ?forensic evidence found at scene? police said ? most likely DNA. Police and IDF canine units were also able to find other body parts stashed near the suitcase. Tel Aviv police then contacted Interpol and the Romanian Police who tracked down the woman?s family in Romania. Denise?s daughter was able to give police her phone number in Israel, which helped them track down Demiran.
Denise?s head has still not been found, but police said that Demiran gave them information that could potentially indicate where the missing head is located.
Police added that they still are not exactly sure how Demiran removed the head or the other appendages, but that he did strangle Denise to death in their apartment on Hashita Street in Hatikva. After which he stuffed the body in a suitcase and dragged it to Hahagana Street, scattering other body parts in dumpsters along the way.? Read more.
