MMQB: Tennis Canada coming of age

Todd

MONTREAL ? You wouldn?t know it from watching Rafael Nadal?s overwhelming destruction of Milos Raonic ySunday ? but tennis in this country has come a long way in the past seven years.

That?s since Louis Borfiga took over the high-performance job at Tennis Canada back in 2006. The past week has since the ultimate vindication of that move, with Raonic and Vasek Pospisil meeting in one semi-final of the men?s draw here in Montreal while Westmount teenager Eugenie Bouchard had another strong performance before running into Petra Kvitova in Toronto.

It?s a highwater mark for tennis in this country and it?s been a long time coming. It?s also a welcome change from the annual spate of stories telling us that Aleksandra Wozniak was really, truly ready at last to make a breakthrough.

This time, the breakthrough is real and it?s coming in numbers to make any Canadian proud.

Look at tennis south of the border ? where no American male is ranked in the top 20 and the women?s side pretty much comes down to Serena Williams and hope for Sloane Stephens ? and you have to feel that Tennis Canada is doing something right.

Raonic will be in the top 10, Pospisil around 40th ? and Filip Peliwo (who made some noise this week himself) is on the way.

tennis

If you tuned in late and saw only Nadal?s clinical dissection of Raonic yesterday, you could be forgiven for thinking that tennis in this country is pretty much where it?s always been. I?m not a big fan of Raonic?s game ? he?s too one-dimensional, relying on that big 215-kilometre serve, too much like a big awkward puppy out there ? but there?s no denying his success.

Raonic on Sunday became the first Canadian since 1958 to play in a Rogers Cup/Canadian Open final. That and the move into the Top 10 made it a splendid week for him.

Like most of the other men on the ATP tour, Raonic is no threat to the top four when they?re on their game. He might move up another notch or two but he is a long, long way from being able to beat a healthy Nadal.

But there are bigger and better things coming. Seeing the kids in the crowd pulling for Raonic yesterday, you couldn?t help thinking that this is the sort of thing that becomes contagious. The kids see their heroes out there, they want to emulate them ? and the next thing you know, you?re a tennis power.

Losing ugly: You?ve heard of winning ugly? Well, the Alouettes are losing ugly. We?re six games into the CFL season and they?ve got enough video for a three-hour lowlight reel showing what has gone wrong.

Fumbles, dropped passes, missed tackles ? it?s like a clown show came to town to replace the once vaunted Als.

Off one hideous loss to the Argos, it appears that firing Dan Hawkins didn?t help a bit. Jim Popp wasn?t responsible for all those fumbles, dropped passes and missed tackles ? but he is responsible for the way this team is run.

I?m not a coaching genius but there is one thing I know: Players need to understand very clearly who?s in charge. When Popp fired Hawkins, he let offensive co-ordinator Mike Miller keep his title, although he was technically demoted.

ALouettes

So Doug Berry is in charge of the offence while Miller is the offensive coordinator? Huh? For the Argos game, Miller flanked Popp on the sidelines while Berry supposedly called the plays from up above.

Berry might have been in quarterback Anthony Calvillo?s ear all night long ? but Miller was in Popp?s ear. So who?s in charge? Berry? Miller? Popp? Calvillo? Does anyone know? Who?s on first?

I dunno. Maybe MarcTrestman could call the plays from Chicago?

Somebody needs to give those metricians a sabre: Couldn?t believe my eyes yesterday when I saw a column?Sunday saying that the Angels' Mike Trout might deserve the MVP ahead of Miguel Cabrera.

That ridiculous argument (which cropped up last year as well) is based on a bunch of outlandish stats dreamed up by nerds who would rather play fantasy baseball than actually watch the grand old game: Stats like OBPS (Out of Baseball Pitch Selection) UFGQ (Ultra-Fantasy Groundball Quotient) and WVFWG (We Vote for White Guys.)

Silly. The MVP belongs to Cabrera, with an honourable mention for Chris Davis. As for Trout ? let him get back to us when his club isn?t among the league?s underachieving bottom-feeders.

Tigers

Lies, rumours &&&& vicious innuendo: Some things never change. Early Sunday afternoon, Tiger Woods was still drawing all the attention at the PGA even though he was 7-over (or up a touchdown, depending on how you look at it) ...

Is it just me, or does Novak Djokovic look way skinny? Djokovic is on this crazy diet which supposedly helps him ? but the guy looks positively emaciated and he isn?t playing that well, by his standards. Have a milk shake or three, dude! ?

It was like ex-jocks with mikes were having a contest all week, trying to see who could say the dumbest thing on air. Jack Clark beat Bernie Kosar by one lawsuit. ?

Last time we looked, the Miami Marlins were drawing only 100 fans per game more than they were drawing in their old ballpark. This is in the new venue they conned out of the Dade County Commissioners. Maybe time Major League Baseball bought the Marlins and moved them to Montreal?

Heroes: Rafa Nadal, Sorana Cirstea, Vasek Pospisil, Eugenie Bouchard, Louis Borfiga, Tennis Canada, Miguel Cabrera, Mo Farah, Usain Bolt, Scott Milanovich, Chad Owens, Jason Dufner, Jim Furyk, the Pittsburgh Pirates &&&& last but not least, Milos Raonic.

Zeros: Tiger Woods, Serena Williams, Alex Rodriguez, Bryce Harper, Brett Lawrie, the Alouettes, Jack Clark, Bernie Kosar, Pierre Gauthier, the Toronto Blue Jays, the Miami Marlins, Claude Brochu, David Samson &&&& last but not least, Jeffrey Loria.

FSU Seminoles ranked No. 15 in Sentinel's preseason college football countdown

FSU quarterback Jameis Winston

FSU's Jameis Winston is projected to win the Seminoles' starting quarterback job. (Stephen M. Dowell, Orlando Sentinel.)

Orlando Sentinel college insider Matt Murschel has ranked all 125 Football Bowl Subdivision teams in the country. The Sentinel staff will take a closer look at a new team daily, counting from No. 125 to our projected No. 1 team.

Today at No. 15: Florida State

Coach: Jimbo Fisher (31-10 entering fourth season; 31-10 overall)

2012 record: 12-2 (7-1 in ACC, won ACC Championship Game)

Look back: Thanks to a string of marquee recruiting classes and Florida State's elite national-contender history, Jimbo Fisher has faced extraordinarily high expectations in Tallahassee. During the 2012 season, the Seminoles won their first ACC championship since 2005 and first Orange Bowl since 2000. However, it still was viewed as a bit of a disappointment by some vocal FSU fans who expected to be national-championship contenders.

The Seminoles raced out to a 5-0 start, but they got limited praise because their schedule was viewed as especially weak compared to other programs.

FSU then suffered what has become a troubling tradition, suffering a loss against a less talented team it was favored to beat. Florida State lost 17-16 at NC State.

The Seminoles bounced back to win five consecutive games and clinch a spot in the ACC Championship Game.

Many figured FSU's elite defense would have no trouble smothering rival Florida's tepid offense, but the Gators scored a surprising 37-26 win over the Seminoles in Tallahassee to close out the regular season.

FSU headed to the ACC title game for an underwhelming matchup against Georgia Tech, a team that was sent to the game after Miami and North Carolina were kept out of the contest thanks to NCAA infractions. The Seminoles had to rally to beat the surprisingly tough Yellow Jackets 21-15 to claim the championship and a trip to the Orange Bowl.

The Seminoles then faced off with the nation's top underdog, Mid-American Conference champion Northern Illinois. FSU had no trouble roughing up NIU, rolling to a 31-10 win.

Offensive starters returning: 7

Offensive starters lost: 4

Defensive starters returning: 4

Defensive starters lost: 7

Key losses: QB EJ Manuel, RB Chris Thompson, DE Bjoern Werner, CB Xavier Rhodes, DE Tank Carradine, LB Vince Williams

Top returnees: QB Jameis Winston, RB Devonta Freeman, RB James Wilder, LB Christian Jones, TE Nick O'Leary, C Bryan Stork, DT Timmy Jernigan, S Lamarcus Joyner, OT Cameron Erving, DE Mario Edwards

Strengths: Fisher's nationally ranked recruiting classes should help the Seminoles offset the loss of key starters to the NFL and bolster depth at other positions.

Redshirt freshman QB Jameis Winston is a dual-sport star who turned in an electrifying performance during the spring game and is favored to win the starting quarterback job. Veteran C Bryan Stork anchors a solid offensive line that should help the new quarterback ease into his role. Devonta Freeman and James Wilder should be potent rushing threats while Nick O'Leary could have a break-out season at tight end.

Israel: Muslim Man From Turkey Beheads Woman In South Tel Aviv

Islam. Beheading. You can?t think of one without thinking about the other ?

By BEN HARTMAN, The Jerusalem Post ? ?A financial dispute between two lovers was the motive behind the murder and decapitation and dismemberment of a Romanian foreign worker?found stuffed inside a suitcase?in south Tel Aviv on Saturday.

The alleged murderer, Turkish citizen Ayden Demiran, 50, was arrested on Tuesday afternoon a few hours before he was set to board a flight to Turkey, police said. Head of the special investigative unit, Officer Sharon Malkah, said police arrested Demiran in the village of Kfar Qassem in the Triangle, where he was known to stay when he wasn?t in Tel Aviv. Under questioning, he reportedly confessed to the crime and was taken by officers to perform a re-enactment of the crime. Demiran has been living in Israel for at least 18 months, where he was employed as a construction worker, Malkah said.

At the moment they have not determined if he acted alone, but that contrary to reports in the Romanian media, only one arrest has been made.

The woman, 45-year-old Ilona Denise of Romania, worked in Israel as a care-taker in recent years, first in Haifa and then later in Tel Aviv. Police said. She is from the town of Valea lui Mihai in Bihor County in western Transylvania, where her daughter Erika is a Hungarian language teacher, according to a Romanian journalist who spoke to the Jerusalem Post on Wednesday. Denise initially came to Israel with a legal work permit in 2004, but the visa had expired at some point before her murder, complicating her ability to find a permanent place of employment.

Her body was identified already on Saturday, due to ?forensic evidence found at scene? police said ? most likely DNA. Police and IDF canine units were also able to find other body parts stashed near the suitcase. Tel Aviv police then contacted Interpol and the Romanian Police who tracked down the woman?s family in Romania. Denise?s daughter was able to give police her phone number in Israel, which helped them track down Demiran.

Denise?s head has still not been found, but police said that Demiran gave them information that could potentially indicate where the missing head is located.

Police added that they still are not exactly sure how Demiran removed the head or the other appendages, but that he did strangle Denise to death in their apartment on Hashita Street in Hatikva. After which he stuffed the body in a suitcase and dragged it to Hahagana Street, scattering other body parts in dumpsters along the way.? Read more.

Pope on world economy: is he market-friendly or a rebel?

    religion

Pope Francis talks with journalists as he flies back Rome following his visit to Brazil July 29, 2013. Pope Francis, in some of the most conciliatory ...

    POOL / Reuters

Pope Francis has used his global platform to discuss his views on the world economy.

In a sense, Pope Francis made clear his world views when he wore practical black shoes and a simple black wristwatch to mass ? a decidedly more humble look than his predecessor, who sported red leather shoes and a ruby cross.

Then he rocked Twitter when, as @Pontifex, he declared: ?My thoughts turn to all who are unemployed, often as a result of a self-centered mindset bent on profit at any cost.?

Pope Francis, who became pope in 2013, has since made other comments on world economic issues, citing the pitfalls of capitalism, decrying global income inequality and?equating low-wage labor to a form of "slavery."

He's even described the?financial corruption in the church as a "spiritual sickness."

Analysts say Pope Francis?leader of some 1.2 billion Catholics?is not necessarily calling for the demise of free market theory. Rather, he's issuing a strong warning to economic leaders.

"Like many people, he thinks capitalism won't survive unless it decreases income disparity," said George Haley, professor of marketing and international business at the University of New Haven.

"I think it's fair to say he's arguing for a more European version of capitalism going forward, especially after the Great Recession, so there's more of a safety net for people when they need it," Haley said.

Joseph Pastore, a business professor at Pace University believes the pope is focused on equality and justice in economics.

"I don't think he's attacking capitalism or the wealthy, because if he did, that strategy would fail," Pastore said.

(Read more:?Pope urges Brazil's youth to fight corruption, apathy)

Some in the business community have taken notice.

"His comments are of high importance to me," said RohitArora, CEO of Biz2Credit, an online site that connects small-business owners with financing. "The kind of issues he's talking about are too often ignored by religious and business leaders."

Although surprising, the pope's comments on global economics are in line with his beliefs, said Mathew Schmalz, a professor of religious studies at the College of the Holy Cross.

"Being a Jesuit priest and having spent so much time in Argentina as bishop and cardinal had a great effect on him," Schmalz said. "He's seen a lot of poverty close up and raised the issue in Argentina before becoming pope."

Papal statements on social and economic justice are not new. In the past century or so, popes have made their thoughts on the issues known through open letters?what the church calls encyclicals.

In 1891, Pope Leo XIII issued an encyclical that rejected both communism and unrestricted capitalism, while affirming the right to private property. But he also supported the rights of labor to form unions, and the need for some "amelioration of the misery and wretchedness pressing so unjustly on the majority of the working class."

Pope John XXIII issued an encyclical in 1961 backing free market ideas, but said that from a Catholic perspective, "the global economy serves a higher good; if the economy booms, but human dignity suffers, the result is unmistakably evil."

Pope John Paul II, known for his strong anti-communist feelings,?issued an encyclical in 1989 warning capitalist nations against letting the collapse of communism "blind them to the need to repair injustices in their own economic system."

Pope Benedict, whose resignation in February opened the way for Francis to head the church,?issued an encyclical in 2009 that called for a world political body to manage the global economy?as well as for more government regulation to pull the world out of the Great Recession.

(Read more:?Arrested Vatican prelate acted as private banker, document says)

"Pope Francis speaks in continuity with all the popes that spoke about economic issues," said Mary Catherine Sommers, a professor of philosophy at the University of St. Thomas.

"The church doesn't choose economic systems any more than political systems around the world but it does keep an eye on human systems," Sommers said.

Michael Bellafiore, a Jesuit priest and professor of theology at the University of Scranton, said Francis and the church have a role to play in shaping the business world.

"The church's task is to form consciences," Bellafiore said. "As such, corporations, banks, unions, investors all have to rise above their immediate interests and compromise. Pope Francis can promote leadership in the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression."

    Attacked as socialist

For his comments, Francis has been derided as?a socialist by conservative economists. And not all Catholics share the same enthusiasm for his thoughts.

"Personally, I?m much more market friendly, as was John Paul II," said Bill Donohue, president of the?Catholic League, an anti-defamation group based in New York.

"I certainly applaud him for recognizing that unrestrained capitalism needs more order," Donahoe said. "If he's emphasizing we can't forget the poor, I'm all for that. But if he's leaning toward a more liberation theology, the more socialist model, which I don't think he is, then I'm against it."

"A lot of Catholics won't like what he says about economics," Schmalz said. "That includes the bureaucracy in the Vatican, which tends to be conservative on moral and economic issues."

"He's called for reforms with the Vatican bank and he's rejecting the rich cars and living quarters popes have used in the past," Schmalz said. "But how far he can go with the church remains to be seen."

(Read more:?Pope says Vatican bank must be 'honest and transparent')

    Francis likely to keep talking

Whether Francis can influence economic decision-making remains uncertain. Haley, of the University of New Haven, said he could use the full force of the church.

"If Francis is serious about this, he could use the Vatican's diplomatic corps to lobby various governments to come up with plans to deal with the world's economic woes," Haley said.

Unlike other popes, Francis has an advantage others didn't, Pastore said.

"Social media and media in general help him get his message out to a global public and he's being noticed because of that," Pastore said. "But what he needs to do is get folks who are capitalists to join the conversation."

Washington Post Sale Lets Company Face Education Challenges

Like its competitors in the education industry, the business faces increased oversight into marketing, student-loan defaults and job-placement claims

Washington Post Co.?s sale of its flagship newspaper to billionaire Jeff Bezos rids the company of its weakest division, letting it focus on a once high-flying education business now beset by government scrutiny.

The Washington-based company draws about 55 percent of its $4 billion in annual revenue from its education unit, including its Kaplan chain of for-profit colleges, whose sales tumbled 9 percent to $2.2 billion last year.

Like its competitors in the education industry, the business faces increased oversight into marketing, student-loan defaults and job-placement claims. Still, the challenges weren?t as daunting as those of the newspaper division, where revenue has shrunk for seven straight years. There wasn?t anything more the company could do to save the storied Washington Post from the print-media industry?s decline, Chairman Don Graham said.

?We?ve tried,? Graham said in an interview after announcing the sale of the newspaper yesterday. ?We have innovated very successfully in terms of building audience, in terms of our reputation and in terms of our products, but not in terms of offsetting the decline in revenues.?

The sale to Bezos will add $250 million to the company?s coffers, and it spurred a share gain of as much as 6.4 percent to $605.18 today. Even so, management won?t have an easy task as they turn their attention back to education. Concern about escalating student debt in a sluggish economy is hurting enrollment, and the company is dealing with more competition from traditional institutions.

    Frank Discussion

The Washington-based company reported a total revenue decline of almost 3 percent last year to $4 billion, while posting a 56 percent drop in operating income.

At the end of 2012, Graham said he had a frank talk with Post Publisher Katharine Weymouth, his niece. They discussed whether they were the best owners for the Post at a time when the newspaper industry was being forced to adapt to the rapid changes brought on by the Internet.

?We asked each other whether there might be some person or company out there who could bring something different,? Graham said. ?None of us -- me, Katherine -- in the family wanted to sell.?

Even so, they wanted to give the Post ?the maximum chance for success,? according to Graham, and decided to go ahead with a plan.

    Bezos Interest

The company hired Allen & Co. to handle the sale process, with the investment bank?s Nancy Peretsman leading the effort. After reaching out to a handful of potential buyers, Bezos expressed interest early this year, according to Graham, who declined to name other suitors.

Graham said he?d known Bezos for at least a decade and a half, consulting with him on technology questions facing the company. As chief executive officer of Amazon.com Inc., Bezos has worked with publishers to develop the Kindle e-reader.

?I had thought early on that Jeff would be a wonderful buyer, but I didn?t expect him to come forward because he?s so single-minded about his company,? Graham said.

After a few months of silence, Bezos sent Graham an e-mail last month to discuss the acquisition.

?Obviously he?d been thinking about it. This wasn?t a sudden or impulsive decision,? Graham said. The deal was eventually clinched in two face-to-face meetings in early July between Graham and Bezos at Allen & Co.?s annual media conference at Sun Valley, Idaho.

    Media Breakups

Washington Post Co. is just the latest newspaper company to cut ties with the print-media business. Tribune Co. announced plans last month to spin off its papers from the company?s TV operations, and News Corp. split up into publishing and entertainment divisions in June.

Time Warner Inc., meanwhile, plans to spin off its Time Inc. magazine empire this year. That will let it focus on its cable networks, including HBO, TNT and TBS.

Washington Post Co. also has tried to diversify its business by expanding into wide-ranging markets. Last month it agreed to buy Forney Corp., a maker of gas and oil igniters, and invested in FaithStreet.com, a website that helps people find a church. Last year, the company announced plans to buy a seller of hospice services. Washington Post Co., which plans to rename itself after the sale to Bezos, also will retain cable systems and broadcast TV stations, as well as websites such as Slate.

    Restructuring Ahead?

The education market still makes up the majority of the company?s sales, leaving it vulnerable to a tougher regulatory climate. Last year, Kaplan said it stopped signing up students at nine campuses and was folding four others into nearby locations.

Kaplan Higher Education?s revenue fell 12 percent in the first quarter, and the company said it is evaluating its cost structure and may incur more restructuring charges this year.

The Post sale at least takes some pressure off the rest of the company, and Bezos is seen as a buyer who can preserve the asset, said Ross Levinsohn, CEO of Guggenheim Digital Media, who sits on the board of Tribune Co.

?It?s a wonderful result for an institution like the Washington Post,? Levinsohn said.

The Graham family?s decision to sell the Post puts a spotlight on the Ochs-Sulzberger clan, which controls the New York Times, said Ken Doctor, a media analyst with research firm Outsell Inc.

New York Times Co. agreed to sell the Boston Globe to Red Sox owner John Henry last week. The question now is whether it tries to sell the flagship Times newspaper as well, given the worsening landscape for print media, Doctor said.

?With the Post sale, you have to wonder about the Sulzbergers,? he said. ?Do the Sulzbergers have the financial wherewithal and the emotional capacity to do what needs to be done? Without that, the logical decision would be to find someone like a Bezos for the Times.?

Drake Says 'Hold On' Is 'Not A Rap Record,' But A Wedding Song

After dropping lyrical gems on recent releases like "All Me," Drake gave us a taste of the variety on his upcoming album Nothing Was The Same with "Hold On, We're Going Home," a track that he and producer Noah "40" Shebib imagine being played at weddings in 10 years.

"It's me and 40 just channeling our Quincy Jones/Michael Jackson production duo," Drake told MTV News. "Obviously no offense to the greats, I know we're not anywhere near that ? it's just us kinda doing our thing, humbly attempting."

"It's not a rap record," he added. "It's not 'Versace,' it's not 'Started From the Bottom.' In approaching this album I was like man, it would be great if we had a record that was played at weddings in 10 years or that people that are away from their families in the army could listen to. Something that just [has] timeless writing, timeless melody. So I did it with the group that we signed to OVO called Majid Jordan."

The pop track contrasts nicely with grittier songs like "5 AM in Toronto," and finds Drake hoping to lock down a little love, singing, "I got my eyes on you/ You're everything that I see/ I want your hot love and emotion, endlessly."

After joking about a name mix-up that's bound to happen ? "[The group is] not Magic Jordan. It's Majid Jordan, even though Magic Jordan is a really cool name" ? Drake explained that he and 40 collaborated with them to make what they hope will be a classic. "Majid is singing on the record with me and Jordan is his production partner. It's a great record. I'm nervous and excited and all these things about it."

"I've never really put out a record like this before, so we'll see how it goes."

40, who started producing for Drake on 2009's So Far Gone, also mixed his sophomore album Take Care. "What ends up happening a lot of times with our records is that, because I can do a lot of things in the studio, whether it be play instruments or produce or edit or run Pro Tools or edit vocals, whatever the case may be, I help him get out his ideas," 40 told MTV News last year. "I think that's the goal of any good producer, is to make sure the artist is delivering what they want."
