Pirates 8 games over .500 for first time since '02

Associated Press Sports

PITTSBURGH (AP) - After getting the hanging slider he was looking for, Drew Sutton thought the ball needed some help after he made contact with it.

"I knew I hit it well," Sutton said, "but I didn't know if it was deep-straightaway-center well.

"But I was yelling at it."

Soon, so was everyone else at PNC Park.

Sutton hit a one-out solo homer in the bottom of the ninth and the Pittsburgh Pirates improved to eight games over .500 for the first time in 20 years with an 8-7 win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night.

Acquired via waivers last week, Sutton homered for the first time since Oct. 3, 2010, lifting the Pirates to their sixth walkoff win of the season, the second via a home run.

"It's why we play the game," said Sutton, who is with his third team this season. "Even guys like me, who bounce around from team to team, every once in a while, you get a moment. You'd better enjoy it."

Unlike in recent years, the Pirates have had plenty of enjoyable moments lately. Pittsburgh (44-36), which has won six of seven, is this far over .500 for the first time since the final day of the 1992 season.

That was the most recent season in which the Pirates had a winning record, 1992. A North American major professional sports record 19 consecutive losing seasons have followed.

Pittsburgh rallied from deficits of 4-0 and 6-2 to take a 7-6 lead on a Garrett Jones two-run homer in the seventh. But with Houston down to its last strike in the ninth, pinch-hitter Jason Castro drove in Jed Lowrie with a double.

"Our resiliency has always been there, and now it's showing," said Pedro Alvarez, who had a pinch-hit two-run single in his first action since leaving a game Sunday with leg cramps. "It's selflessness from everybody. When you have group of guys who are invested in each other, things like that show."

Andrew McCutchen continued his recent torrid pace by going 3 for 4 with a home run, taking over the National League batting lead at .360. He is 7 for 9 in the series and 13 for 18 in his past four games.

Sutton had three hits and Jones and Casey McGehee each had two hits for Pittsburgh, which has homered in each of its past 11 games. That's the team's longest stretch since a 13-game streak June 19-July 3, 1994.

Houston has lost six straight and eight in a row on the road.

Sutton took a 1-1 pitch from Wesley Wright (0-2) into the bullpen beyond the center field wall, giving the Pirates their 17th win in their past 22 home games.

"We've been in a good place for a while now," manager Clint Hurdle said.

"But I didn't have Sutton, home run, right-handed, to center field. I was just looking for a way to get a man on base and give Cutch a chance to swing the bat - and he kept Cutch from having to go up there."

Earlier, it appeared as if Jones' line drive home run to right off Brandon Lyon in the seventh would be Pittsburgh's dramatic homer. It followed a McCutchen infield single, giving Jones home runs on consecutive days and three in the past five games. He has 12 on the season.

The lead didn't hold, though, because of Castro's hit off closer Joel Hanrahan. It was the third blown save in 23 opportunities for Hanrahan (4-0).

A.J. Burnett's career-high eight-start winning streak - longest by a Pirates pitcher since 1974 - was snapped. He allowed six runs and 12 hits in five-plus innings but came away with a no-decision when the Pirates rallied against Lucas Harrell and Lyon.

Similar to teammate Jordan Lyles the day before, Harrell cruised through the first three innings but was hit hard after that. Harrell allowed only an infield single and had six strikeouts through three innings, but McCutchen followed a Sutton leadoff single in the fourth with his 16th home run and fourth in his past 10 games.

"I felt like I threw the ball great today," Harrell said. "There at the end, everything kind of feel their way. They're a team that has been winning and once the ball started rolling, it was a snowball effect."

Houston had taken a 2-0 lead in the second off the first of Schafer's two RBI singles and a Jose Altuve sacrifice fly. They added single runs in the third (Scott Moore's RBI double) and fourth (Lowrie's RBI single) and two in the sixth to answer the Pirates.

Notes: Dock Ellis was the previous Pittsburgh pitcher to win eight consecutive starts in 1974. Ellis also won 10 straight outings in 1971. ... Before the game, the Pirates recalled OF Gorkys Hernandez from Triple-A Indianapolis, optioning OF Jose Tabata to the team. Hernandez entered the game in the fifth inning to replace Alex Presley. Presley left the game due to concussion-like symptoms sustained while diving for a Lowrie hit in the first inning. ... Astros 3B Chris Johnson (left side strain) missed his third consecutive game. He hit off a tee and took ground balls Tuesday, and manager Brad Mills said it was possible he would return during this series. ... Mills said RHP Wilton Lopez (right elbow sprain) will go on a rehabilitation stint in the minors and soon thereafter be activated from the disabled list. ... Astros OF Justin Maxwell (left ankle) rejoined the team after electing against surgery and will go on a rehab stint over the All-Star break. ... Houston first base coach Bobby Meacham is away from the team for personal reasons. Matt Sinatro, the team's catching and advance scouting coordinator, is filling in. ... Wednesday's Pirates starter, RHP Kevin Correia, has never beaten the Astros in nine starts. Houston's LHP Dallas Keuchel (1-0, 1.35) will make his fourth career start.

Chuck E. Cheese transforming into a rock star

(AP) ? Chuck E. Cheese has been given the pink slip.

The company that operates the chain of children's pizza restaurants is retiring the giant rodent's outdated image ? and the man who voiced its character for nearly two decades. CEC Entertainment Inc. says it plans to launch a national ad campaign Thursday with a revamped image of Chuck E. Cheese as a hip, electric-guitar-playing rock star.

It's just the latest makeover for the 35-year-old mascot, which started life as a New Jersey rat who sometimes carried a cigar.

CEC Entertainment, based in Irving, Texas, is struggling to revive sales at its more than 500 pizza restaurants, which offer games, prizes and a musical variety show. In May, CEC said revenue at its locations open at least a year fell 4.2 percent in the first quarter and lowered its outlook for the year.

According to ShowBizPizza.com, a Chuck E. Cheese fan site, the man who voiced the mascot in commercials since 1993 learned of his replacement only after coming across "Chuck's Hot New Single" online and realizing it was sung by someone else. The fan site late last week published a Facebook post by Duncan Brannan, the mascot's former voice.

Brannan could not be reached for comment. But in the post, he writes that part of his assignment when he first took on the role was to transform Chuck E. Cheese from "a joke-telling, sometime off-color New Jersey rat" to a lovable, mainstream mouse.

He notes that there were various signs in recent months that suggested he was being pushed out, but that he was assured by the company that he was still the voice of Chuck E.

The Facebook post was republished by The Dallas Observer this week.

CEC Entertainment says that Brannan wasn't fired but that it simply "chose to utilize new voice talent."

The new Chuck E. Cheese that launches this week will be voiced by Jaret Reddick, the lead singer for the pop-punk bank Bowling for Soup. The Chuck E. Cheese Facebook page now shows a silhouette of a cartoon mouse playing a guitar. The details of Chuck E.'s new image will be unveiled this week.

The first Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theatre location opened in 1977 in San Jose, Calif. According to ShowBizPizza.com, the idea for Chuck E. came from a generic mascot costume that was acquired by the founder, Nolan Bushnell, who also co-founded Atari and Pong. Executives originally considered calling the restaurant "Rick Rat's Pizza" but a PR agency figured a rat would be a bad mascot for a pizza chain.

The name Chuck E. Cheese was selected because it downplayed the mascot's species and forced people to smile when they said it, according to the site.

Mosaic in Israel shows biblical Samson

By Joe Sterling, CNN

July 4, 2012 -- Updated 1651 GMT (0051 HKT)

Mosaics found in an ancient synagogue include images of women, as well as the biblical figure Samson.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • The ancient synagogue is in Israel's Galilee region
  • Samson is a well-known Bible figure
  • The Samson scene is straight from the Book of Judges
  • Another shows a Hebrew inscription

(CNN) -- Archaeologists are reveling in the discovery of an ancient synagogue in northern Israel, a "monumental" structure with a mosaic floor depicting the biblical figure of Samson and a Hebrew inscription.

The synagogue -- dating to the fourth and fifth centuries in both the Talmudic and late Roman periods -- is in Huqoq, an ancient Jewish village in the country's Galilee region, the Israeli Antiquities Authority said.

Jodi Magness, a professor of early Judaism in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, said the building was found in a recent excavation.

She called the find "exciting" and described the "very high quality of the artwork" in the mosaic, crafted with "tiny colored stone cubes." Only a few late Roman period synagogues contained mosaics with biblical scenes, said Magness, one of the leaders of a U.S., Israeli and Canadian team engaged in the digs.

"This discovery is significant," she said, calling the site "extraordinary" and "stunning."

Samson was known for enormous physical strength and his fighting prowess against the Philistines, the enemy of the Israelites.

His story, recounted in the Bible's Book of Judges, mentions Delilah, a Philistine woman who worked to undermine Samson. She cut his hair after she persuaded Samson to reveal that his long hair was the secret to this strength.

Magness said the mosaic scene shows Samson putting torches between the tails of foxes. That image, from a vignette in the Book of Judges, is a reference to Samson exacting revenge on the Philistines by sending out flame-laden foxes to burn their lands.

She said the only other images of Samson in synagogues are at one nearby place in the Galilee known as Wadi Hamam, where Samson is seen "smiting" the Philistines with the jawbone of an ass. Another is in what is now modern Turkey, depicting scenes from Samson's life.

Samson is also depicted in early Christian art, she said.

Why is Samson portrayed and apparently revered in two synagogues close to each other? Magness said she plans to find out.

The other image contains two apparently female faces flanking a circular medallion. It has a Hebrew inscription referring to rewards for carrying out good deeds.

"Our mosaics are also important because of their high artistic quality and the tiny size of the mosaic cubes. This, together with the monumental size of the stones used to construct the synagogue's walls, suggest a high level of prosperity in this village, as the building clearly was very costly," the authority said in its statement, citing Magness.

Is Congress to blame for a downshifting US economy?

Evidence is mounting that the economy is taking a hit because Congress can't ? or won't ? deal with the 'fiscal cliff' looming at year's end. The?fight on Capitol Hill last summer over the national debt limit also took an economic toll.?

By David Grant,?Staff writer / July 3, 2012

The inability of Congress to act on myriad issues is hurting the US economy, say analysts, including the Congressional Budget Office itself.

A rising chorus of voices, inside and outside Washington, is warning that political gridlock in Congress is now so severe that it has actually done damage to the economy ? and threatens to do a lot more.

President Obama, of course, is the chief "blame Congress" finger-pointer, perhaps to be expected as he fights to win reelection as the economy flails. But plenty of others ? Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, the US Chamber of Commerce, and Congress's own budget office, to name a few ? also cite Congress as a factor that is inhibiting economic recovery, though they put it more diplomatically than does Mr. Obama.

Consider Mr. Bernanke's reply to lawmakers when asked June 7 about Fed efforts to stimulate the economy via low interest rates: "I'd be much more comfortable," he said, if "Congress would take some of this burden from us and address those issues."

Or take this complaint about how "uncertainty" is causing small businesses to refrain from hiring and investing. "Most of this uncertainty ... is coming out of Washington," concludes a June 14 report from the National Federation of Independent Business.

Then there's this tart assessment from the Congressional Budget Office about the consequences of lawmakers leaving unresolved some pressing decisions about future taxes and government spending. "Uncertainty about the resolution of fiscal policy early next year is weighing on the economy, we think, diminishing people's and businesses' spending this year," said CBO Director Douglas Elmendorf in June.

Wait a minute, you say? What about the debt crisis in Europe? What about the long-suffering housing market and the costs of "Obamacare"? What about layoffs in state and local governments? What about lack of presidential leadership, perhaps? Are they not to blame for the US economy running out of steam?

True, say many economists, some or all of the above contribute. But evidence is mounting that Washington's food fight last summer over raising the nation's debt limit and the "fiscal cliff" that looms at year's end are taking a toll on economic growth and employment. And both are crises manufactured in large part by an ineffective Congress.

"This economy can gain traction and really swing into full gear if we just nail down what we're going to do about the fiscal cliff and attaining fiscal sustainability," says Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody's Analytics.

That's a big "if," if recent history is a guide.

That was then

New brain receptor for drug 'fantasy' identified

ScienceDaily (July 2, 2012) ? Researchers are closer to understanding the biology behind GHB, a transmitter substance in the brain, best known in its synthetic form as the illegal drug fantasy.

In the 1960s, gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) was first discovered as a naturally occurring substance in the brain. Since then it has been manufactured as a drug with a clinical application and has also developed a reputation as the illegal drug fantasy and as a date rape drug. Its physiological function is still unknown.

Now a team of researchers at the Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology at the University of Copenhagen has shown for the first time exactly where the transmitter substance binds in the brain under physiologically relevant conditions. The results have recently been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"We have discovered that GHB binds to a special protein in the brain -- more specifically a GABAA-receptor. The binding is strong even at very low dosage. This suggests that we have found the natural receptor, which opens new and exciting research opportunities, in that we have identified an important unknown that can provide the basis for a full explanation of the biological significance of the transmitter," says Laura Friis Eghorn, PhD student.

Illegal use and possible antidote

Fantasy is also used as a so-called date rape drug, because in moderate amounts it has sedative, sexually stimulating and soporific effects. The compound is also abused for its euphoric effect, but in combination with alcohol, for example, it is a deadly cocktail that can lead to a state of deep unconsciousness or coma.

"GHB is registered for use as a drug to treat alcoholism and certain types of sleep disorders, but the risk of abuse presents difficulties. In the long-term, understanding how GHB works will enable us to develop new and better pharmaceuticals with a targeted effect in the brain, without the dangerous side-effects of fantasy," explains Laura Friis Eghorn, Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology.

Fantasy is an extremely toxic euphoriant, because the difference between a normal intoxicating dose and a fatal dose is so small. A better understanding of the biological mechanisms behind GHB-binding in the brain will benefit research into a life-saving antidote for this drug. Today there is no known antidote.

Statistics from Denmark in 2010 show that 8-10 percent of young people who frequent night clubs have had experience with Fantasy. However, since the drug is often also used in private for its sedative effect, it is difficult to estimate the extent of abuse.

Researchers on a targeted fishing expedition

The new research findings are the result of a collaboration between researchers at the University of Sydney in Australia and medicinal chemists at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences:

"Our chemist colleagues designed and produced special ligands -- that are mimics of GHB in several variations. This enabled us to go on a targeted fishing expedition in the brain. We have slowly found our way to the receptor, which we have also been able to test pharmacologically. In itself, it is not unusual to find new receptors in the brain for known compounds. However, when we find a natural match rooted in the brain's transmitter system, the biological implications are extremely interesting," explains Petrine Wellendorph, associate professor and head of the responsible research group that produced the pioneering results.
