Doxo

Online social networks, notably Facebook, centralize our virtual interactions with friends and family. Financial management apps, such as Mint.com , act as hubs for personal finance. A new type of app that builds on this same premise of centralization is the online family organizer, a one-stop shop for household management. Among the newcomers in the space is Doxo (free), a website that lets you back-up important family documents, manage household payments, and connect with utility and service providers.

While Doxo is off to a strong start in helping shape what online family organizers will be, it acts a little too much like a filing cabinet and not enough like the matriarchs and patriarchs who have traditionally managed families by keeping important information about people in their heads. It's the people part that's missing. There are no options in Doxo for simply listing the people in the family and associating information or documents to them. So while you can upload your marriage certificate, there's no shared calendar for reminding your spouse of your upcoming anniversary. Connect a healthcare provider's information to your Doxo account, and you can see statements regarding hospital visits, but you can't associate them to, say, your son.

Another such service, AboutOne (beta) (free, 3 stars) has the opposite problem. It's well-thought out in how it handles people, but doesn't support payments and bills. In some sense, it's less useful than Doxo, though, because at least with Doxo you have a reason to log in frequently?to keep an eye on your bills?and therefore you'll use the site more. With AboutOne, I could easily imagine setting up an account, filling in important information, and then forgetting all about it in two or three months. And while I wouldn't classify the family tree and genealogy website Ancestry.com as a family organizer, it does have a lot of the same features, including the ability to record important details about family members and upload family documents, keepsake photos, and more.

When you set up an account in Doxo, it takes several measures to help keep your documents protected. First, every login consists of a username, password, security question, and security image. Each stage of a login occurs on a new screen, too, a tougher system for hackers to crack. And because it was founded by a team who had a background in monetary security, Doxo treats every file you upload to it as it were money. It's very secure.

The site contains some pre-populated sections, particularly for connecting with service providers, but you can create your own folder structures, too. You can name the sections whatever you want to store, for example, copies of your medical history, your last will and testament, or paperwork related to your job. I do wish more suggestions came with the account, though. Seeing how other people use Doxo might have given me more ideas beyond what I could think of by myself on the spot. I'd love to see a list of common folder names or some other suggestion mechanism.

One neat feature in the billing and services area is the ability to set a price-limit on bills that autopay. If a payment exceeds a certain amount, Doxo will alert you and require you to authenticate and approve the bill before it's paid.

Online family organizers are still in their infancy, and while I like where Doxo is heading with its free service, I would like to see it include more areas for storing information about people. Family first.?

The Galaxy Nexus is back at the Google Play store - sort of

Galaxy Nexus

We heard it was going to happen, and today the Galaxy Nexus has appeared with a price and an "add to cart" button again in Google Play, but things are still a bit off. Prior to the sales ban, we were able to click and get almost instant gratification knowing the phone was shipping out immediately, but now we're seeing a two to three week delay. We're not sure if this is a way to get time to make changes to skirt Apple's legal team, but it sounds reasonable.

All we know is that with Jelly Bean, this is the phone to have. We're glad to see that add to cart button. If you've been thinking about it, might want to click it now before the next round of courtroom lunacy happens.

Order the Galaxy Nexus from Google Play. Thanks everyone who sent this in!

Mexicans at polls talk of jobs, drug violence

Mexico's presidential election today is a choice between four candidates ? and not voting at all.?

By Sara Miller Llana / July 1, 2012

A man casts one of his ballots at a polling station in Atlacomulco, Mexico July 1. Mexico's more than 79 million voters went to the polls Sunday to elect a president, who will serve one six-year term, as well as 500 congressional deputies and 128 senators.

Jose Eduardo Salas is a young Mexican with a degree in mechanical engineering, no job, and few prospects, he says, so he is placing his vote in Mexico's presidential election today for Enrique Pe?a Nieto of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), who he says he believes holds Mexico's best hope for progress.

He, like millions of other Mexicans, are at the polls today to elect a leader for the next six years, one who will have to address a sputtering economy and a crime wave that has seen over 50,000 killed in drug-related violence in the past six years.

Polls leading up to the race have put Mr. Pe?a Nieto at the front of a pack of four, even though the PRI held a tight, authoritarian grip on Mexico for 71 years, until it was voted out of power in 2000.

But many Mexicans remained undecided leading up to the race, and many have also opted not to vote, currents present in Salas's own family.

His grandfather, Roberto Cienfuegos, accompanied his grandson and son to the station, with their 2-year-old Boxer Kikon, but stayed outside. He has no plans to vote.

?It doesn't make a difference,? says Mr. Cienfuegos, who voted for the leftist candidate in the 2006 race who is also running this year, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Mr. Lopez Obrador lost by less than a percentage point, declared fraud, and never accepted the results as many of his followers, including Cienfuegos.

His son, Juan Manuel Cienfuegos, did opt to vote ? though kept his pick private, as many Mexicans do ? but expressed deep skepticism that it will even make a difference. ?Crime and jobs are the most important problems,? says the small business owner. ?But no one is going to be able to solve either.?

Reports from around the country showed that voting was underway without any incidents of major violence. The polls are open until 6 p.m. local time and partial results are expected two hours later.

Pe?a Nieto's main rivals are Lopez Obrador of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) and Josefina Vazquez Mota of the right-leaning ruling party, the National Action Party (PAN). President Felipe Calderon is not running for re-election, as under the constitution presidents are barred from a second term.

Each of the candidates had clear supporters today when the Monitor asked voters what their preference was, except the fourth candidate Gabriel Quadri, the only candidate from outside the major parties: He is expected to figure in the low single-digits.

Here are profiles are the other three candidates, the policies that they are offering, and the baggage that their parties carry as election 2012 unfolds:

Enrique Pe?a Nieto

Backroom deals. Rigged elections. Pacts with drug lords.

Those are the accusations thrown at Mexico's?Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI)?after 71 years in power, an era that Nobel laureate?Mario Vargas Llosa?dubbed the ?perfect dictatorship.?

PFT: Broncos say iPad playbooks give them edge

Anthony HargroveAP

[Editor's note:? The eight-page, single-spaced letter from Commissioner Roger Goodell affirming the suspensions of the four players accused of involvement in the Saints' bounty program raises several intriguing points, arguments, and circumstances.? We're breaking them up into separate posts, because there's not much else to write about during the league's annual dead zone.]

Lost at times in the analysis of the Saints alleged bounty program is the rigid, almost military hierarchy that brings structure to the inherent chaos of football.

Coaches give orders, and players follow orders.

In this case, with former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams implementing a system that he reportedly used in at least two of the other cities where he coached, what options did his players have?? And so, at the June 18 appeal hearing, NFLPA outside counsel Jeffrey Kessler aruged that the players ?simply followed what their supervisors directed them to do.?

Setting aside for now the inconsistency between claiming there was no bounty system and arguing that the players were simply following orders when they participated in a pay-for-performance system that rewarded players for clean, legal hits that coincidentally caused injury, the argument has some basic appeal.

Commissioner Roger Goodell disagrees.? In the July 3 letter upholding the suspensions of Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma, Saints defensive end Will Smith, Packers defensive end Anthony Hargrove, and Browns linebacker Scott Fujita, Goodell initially points out that ?[n]o evidence was offered at the [June 18] hearing to support that assertion, and it was contradicted by multiple individuals interviewed during the investigation.?

Goodell then explains that he ?took into account the actions of the coaches? in assessing discipline.

Of course, some would say that a one-year suspension for Vilma constitutes a much stiffer punishment than the one-year suspension imposed on Saints coach Sean Payton.? The difference between players? careers and coaches? careers resembles the distinction between dog years and human years.? Payton can coach two decades or more after his suspension ends; Vilma after sitting out an entire season may be done.

Then there?s Hargrove, suspended half of a year for lying to investigators.? Though he has never admitted to lying, he submitted a written declaration reflecting that Gregg Williams and Joe Vitt had told Hargrove what to say when meeting with the league back in 2010.

?Assuming for the moment that he was given such a direction,? Goodell writes, ?it does not excuse Mr. Hargrove from being truthful to NFL investigators when asked specifically about the existence of the program.? Mr. Hargrove?s conduct was all the more troubling because if he had been forthcoming when questioned in 2010, the program ? and the enhanced risk of injury that it entailed ? could have been stopped much sooner.?

Of course, that same point applies to Williams, who has been suspended at least one year, and Vitt, who has been suspended only six games.

Let?s focus on that for a second.? Hargrove allegedly lied to investigators, and Vitt alleged lied to investigators.? But the guy with the lower rank got a bigger suspension,? a gap that is magnified by the inherently shorter nature of the playing career.

Then there?s the reality that players who don?t follow orders can quickly find themselves ostracized, regardless of whether it?s an order they shouldn?t have followed.? At a time when the NFL is so intent on protecting those who secretly assisted the investigation from possible locker-room retaliation, why can?t the NFL acknowledge the basic reality that players who refuse to do what coaches tell them to do will see their dog-year careers instead mimic the lifespan of the mayfly?
