Leeches and lances might seem like prescriptions from the past. But bloodletting might be back in vogue. A small study shows that losing a little blood might improve cardiovascular health for obese people who also have what?s called metabolic syndrome.

The study tracked 33 patients with metabolic syndrome?defined by the presence of some of an assortment of conditions, such as high cholesterol, hypertension and insulin resistance. Researchers took 300 milliliters of blood from the patients, a little less than the one pint standard donation, with a repeat treatment a month later.

After six weeks, treated adults had lower blood pressure than the control group. Glucose levels also decreased, which suggests limited blood removal might improve metabolic health. The findings are in the journal BMC Medicine. [Khosrow Houschyar et al., "Effects of phlebotomy-induced reduction of body iron stores on metabolic syndrome: results from a randomized clinical trial"]

The researchers think that the blood loss reduces iron levels. And excess iron in the blood has been tied to many metabolic syndrome ailments.

The FDA has okayed leeches for some procedures. Which could lead patients to thank their doctors for a treatment that sucks.

(AP) ? An elusive songbird that wings its way each year from austere mountaintops of the northeastern U.S. to the steamy forests of the Caribbean has inspired the creation of what conservationists hope will be a new model for nature reserves in a country that has long struggled with deforestation.

The reserve is taking shape in a lushly overgrown former cattle ranch measuring about 1,000 acres, at the edge of a deep green forest in the Dominican Republic's rugged northeast. Conservation-minded Dominican and U.S. investors have acquired the plot as a pilot project, hoping to protect what they say is a global biodiversity hotspot that's home to dozens of threatened species.

Tentatively known as the Reserva Privada Zorzal, the government sees the reserve as a potential example, showing that such land can be put to better uses than burning down the trees to convert it to pasture, a typical approach in this Caribbean country with only about 40 percent of its forest cover left. Neighboring Haiti, which shares the island of Hispaniola, has virtually none of its forest standing.

Jesus Moreno, a Dominican businessman whose family is partially funding the reserve, says the portion of the property where most of the trees have already been removed is well-suited to low-intensity, organic agriculture. He plans to grow macadamia trees and cacao, the raw material in chocolate, while allowing the forest to regenerate, in perpetuity, on three-fourths of the holding. The country's environment minister is scheduled to inaugurate the reserve project on June 5.

"I am not trying to make this into a big business and make a lot of money," said Moreno, whose family's ventures also include a nursery that grows macadamia trees and the country's only factory processing the nuts. "We are trying to create a model and break the cycle of destruction."

The concept of setting aside private land for conservation in land trusts or easements is an old one, long in use in the U.S. and elsewhere, but still rare in the Dominican Republic, a largely poor country.

Some private landowners have set aside tracts for ecotourism and nature reserves, and the government has designated more than 130 public reserves. But much of the country's forests face threats from development, agriculture and illegal timber harvesting, carving what remains into ever smaller chunks that leave species isolated and vulnerable.

In practice, the government reserves usually provide protection to endangered species in name only, said Sesar Rodriguez, the executive director of the Dominican Environmental Consortium.

Among those species at risk is the zorzal migratorio, known in English as the Bicknell's thrush. The palm-size, brownish songbird mostly comes out at dusk or dawn and, like many birds, heads south in the winter. It divides its time between the Caribbean islands and mountaintop forests in the northeastern U.S. and southern Canada that generally rise above 3,000 feet.

The bird is considered vulnerable, with an estimated fewer than 100,000 in the wild, because it occupies a narrow range of habitat that's under pressure on both sides of its migratory route, said Chris Rimmer, an ornithologist at the Vermont Center for Ecostudies who is an expert on the Bicknell's thrush and helped establish the reserve. Threats to the species in the U.S. include air pollution and loss of the conifer forest habitat from development and climate change.

It's not a high-profile species likely to spur public passions, and some bird species in the Dominican Republic are under a more dire threat, Rimmer readily acknowledges. But he and others are nonetheless devoted to the Bicknell's thrush, what he calls an "enigmatic" bird.

"It's much bigger than just this one little migratory songbird," Rimmer said. "If we protect it we automatically protect all the other elements of the flora and fauna, many of which are themselves under siege."

The Cordillera Septentrional range, a mist-shrouded cloud forest that shimmers an emerald green in the distance from the former pasture acquired for the reserve, is also considered habitat for vulnerable species such as the Hispaniolan parrot and mammals such as the Hispaniolan solenodon, a nocturnal burrower that resembles a possum with a long snout.

Rimmer, for one, has spent countless hours studying the Bicknell's thrush in the granite mountains of New England and the dense forests of the Dominican Republic, listening for its nasal, swirling call. "It's kind of ethereal, I guess, kind of mysterious," he said of the sound.

He and other researchers noticed that as the Dominican Republic was losing forest, female Bicknell's were being crowded out of their prime habitat by the larger males, depriving them of food they need for the journey back to North America.

He began working with the Dominican Environmental Consortium and others to find a way to expand two areas designated as protected by the government ? the Loma Quita Espuela, which Moreno's father helped found, and the Guaconejo reserves.

This loose-knit group eventually found land owned by the family of an elderly doctor that was just a few miles west of the Loma Quita Espuela reserve, prime habitat for the thrush and near the country's cacao-growing center of San Pedro Macoris, a combination of factors that seemed perfect for a blend of profit and preservation, said Charles Kerchner, an American working as a project manager for the consortium. Part of the land was still an active cattle ranch, the rest already in various stages of regrowth and some had been left untouched for so long that it had become fairly healthy secondary growth forest - not virgin, by any means, but not bad.

Most of the money for Reserva Privada Zorzal came from the Eddy Foundation of Willsboro, New York, and Moreno's family, which previously owned a controlling stake in the Helados Bon chain of ice cream stores in the Dominican Republic and neighboring Haiti, Kerchner said.

Danneris Santana, a vice minister in the natural resources ministry, said about a dozen new private reserves are in process of getting approval under regulations that were updated last year. Moreno and others involved in the zorzal project say several landowners in the vicinity of their site are close to adopting similar plans.

"While it's great that we are doing (the Zorzal reserve), it's an isolated project and we need others to protect their land as well," Kerchner said.

Much will depend on the economic viability of the effort. Besides the macadamia and cacao, Kerchner said they are looking for other sustainable uses of the surrounding forest, such as honey production and high-end chocolate.

The Dominican Republic is already a producer of organic cacao in the fertile hills around San Francisco de Macoris and has a growing macadamia nut crop, but the country is not a significant global supplier of either commodity. Most of the world's cacao comes from Africa and Indonesia; Hawaii and Australia are the main producers of macadamia nuts.

The backers of the project expect to allow public access but the plans are not yet defined. The property is more than an hour's drive along a bone-jarring road from the nearest town.

"To be a sustainable business, we need to get value from this forest," Kerchner said.

Canon Vixia HF R300

With video-capable phones and cameras, consumer camcorders?are in a tough spot when it comes to balancing price and usefulness. The Canon Vixia HF M50?($649.99, 3 stars) captures great video, but at that price, you might as well get a high-end digital camera that also takes great still images. The Canon Vixia HF R300 ($349.99 direct) falls in the lower range of the company's consumer camcorder line, but offers a far more compelling combination of performance and value. It lacks some of the low-light prowess found in the M50, but takes the advantage with a wider angle lens and 32x optical zoom. The smaller sensor still produces some great looking high-definition video, making the R300 a solid choice for the weekend videographer looking for a no-frills, easy-to-use standalone camcorder.

Design and Features
The R300 looks a lot like the higher-end M50, measuring 2.2 by 2.1 by 4.5 inches (HWD) and weighing in at 8.8 ounces. It feels a bit flimsier than the M50 (2.5 by 2.7 by 4.8 inches / 10.9 ounces), but is still comfortable to hold and shoot for long periods. The control layout is nearly identical on the R300 and M50, with a Record button on the right side, where your thumb naturally sits, and a zoom rocker on top, within reach of your index finger. In the LCD recess are Video Snap, Home, and Playback buttons, as well as a 3.5mm headphone and microphone jack, mini HDMI out, and mini USB out. There is no built-in memory, only a single slot for an SD, SDHC, or SDXC card. The lens cover is engaged and disengaged by a small switch to its right, which is less convenient than the automatic cover on the M50.?

All controls are accessed with the 3-inch touch-screen LCD. It definitely gives the R300 a clean and minimalist look, but I found navigating the touch menus to be a bit cumbersome. Focus, white balance, and exposure are all buried in touch menus, and getting precise control is too difficult. With this type of camcorder, however, I expect most users will stick to the fully automatic mode, which I found to be fast and accurate in most situations. The 230k-dot LCD is the same as the one found on the M50, and is still a bit too grainy and dim for bright outdoor light.

The R300 uses a smaller 1/4.85-inch HD CMOS sensor, but also packs a far more versatile lens. The 32x zoom lens features a 38.5-1232mm focal length (35mm equivalent) with an f/1.8-4.5 aperture, which is wider and longer than the M50's 10x zoom (43.4-436mm) with its f/1.8-3.0 aperture. Canon advertises a 51x zoom factor, using what it calls the Advanced Zoom feature, but really this is just a combination of optical and digital zoom.?

Performance and Conclusions
Though it lacks the "Pro" designation found on the M50, the R300 is a capable shooter, capturing crisp and clear high-definition video. You can choose from three shooting modes?Auto, Manual, and Cinema?with the latter simulating the look and frame rate of most film projects. Video format and quality can also be adjusted, with the highest setting, MXP, recording 1080i60 video in AVCHD format. Much like the M50, the R300 is limited to interlaced video as opposed to progressive, capturing 60 interlaced fields per second and encoding the video at 30 frames per second.

The resulting video is very similar to the M50, which is to say good, with sharp detail and fine textures. White balance is a bit less accurate with the R300, with colors skewing towards cooler hues. The smaller sensor means smaller pixels, which results in reduced low-light performance. The difference is most evident in the amount of image noise apparent in low-lighting situations. The M50 excelled, while the R300 showed noticeable grain in low-light. It didn't ruin the video by any means, but it is evident when playing back on large screen HDTVs.

Image stabilization is solid, helping steady shots at both the wide end and telephoto max. The 32x zoom is impressive, and could really come in handy if filming, say, a school play from the back row of a large auditorium. Obviously even powered image stabilization can only do so much, and when fully zoomed, video had the same dreamy wobble found on the M50, though it was a bit more noticeable on the R300. Autofocus was quick and accurate, and I actually encountered fewer instances where the focus would shift to the background inadvertently than on the M50. Audio quality was on par with the M50, with similar issues with picking up wind and other ambient room noises. And as with the M50, the R300 has a 3.5mm mic input for better audio capture with an external microphone.?

When compared with video captured by a point-and-shoot camera, like our Editors' Choice Canon PowerShot S100?($429.99, 4.5 stars), the R300's video lacked some of the saturation and vibrancy, but was able to achieve similar levels of detail and sharpness. The R300 does have an advantage in moving shots, like a slow pan, where the S100 turned in slightly choppy video. Still images, which are captured at 2-megapixel resolution, however, don't loook great on the R300, with too much image noise and loss of finer details.

The Canon Vixia HF R300 strikes a solid balance between performance, features, and price. At $349.99 it's less expensive than most digital cameras that shoot comparable video. It lacks the built-in memory, Wi-Fi, and low light performance of the M50, but also costs considerably less. A solid camera like the PowerShot S100 is more versatile, taking far better stills and capturing relatively sharp 1080p video. However, if you're sold on the traditional camcorder form-factor, the R300 is a solid, easy to use, and relatively affordable option for more casual shooters.

Small Business Online Accounting | Business World

Not too long ago new businesses either had to go to the store to buy a bookkeeping program, or outsource their bookkeeping to a local bookkeeper.? Both solutions worked but not without problems.

Purchased accounting packages required the user to train on the system.? Often an outside consultant would be required to set up the software and configure a suitable chart of accounts.? The software would need updates, or an updated computer would need the software installed and data transferred over.

The new trend of online accounting has the following advantages

Remote Date Storage:? Since the data is stored off site, it is not vulnerable to loss in a fire, flood or break in at the business.? If the business has a physical loss at least all the accounting records are safe.

Regular Backups:? The host takes care of backing up your data with remote servers.? A major loss of data would devastate the host?s business, so they take the job of maintaining client data very seriously.

Access from Multiple Locations:? The business owner or manager can access the accounting data from any location with Internet access without having to call anyone.? No more explaining over the phone to an assistant how to log in and retrieve data or paying the contract bookkeeper to look up an invoice.? Remote access is ideal for a business with multiple locations or for digital nomads running their online businesses from beaches around the world.

Instant Paperless Invoicing:? In most hosted applications, invoices can be created directly in the accounting system and emailed out directly.? A salesperson could even log in from a client?s office right after closing a sale and create the invoice on the spot.? The client gets the invoice in their email and hands the sales person a check or makes a deposit by credit card.? The paper chase is dramatically reduced.

Collaboration with Bookkeepers:? Since the hosted application can be accessed from any location, the business that uses a contract bookkeeper can now access data without needing to call the bookkeeper.? Not only is this far more convenient but it allows the owner to quietly monitor the bookkeepers progress at anytime with a few clicks.

Off shoring: Since the hosted accounting system can be accessed from anywhere, off shoring of bookkeeping, and achieving the resulting cost savings, becomes simple.? Simply scan the original paper invoices and upload them to an online storage location such as Google Documents accessible to the offshore bookkeeper.? The documents are input and the work can be checked by the owner online anytime.? A side benefit of this system is that a digital backup of the original accounting records is created offsite.

Overall, using online outsourced accounting services from the professionals has plenty of benefits over more traditional options.

You?ll save money, receive quality assistance from professionals, and always have someone available to answer your questions.

'Mud': Cannes Competition Ends With Matthew McConaughey & Reese Witherspoon Tear-Jerker (PHOTOS)

Mud Cannes

The cast of "Mud."

CANNES, France -- Director Jeff Nichols wraps up the competition lineup at Cannes wading deep in the Mississippi river, with "Mud," a heart-wrenching Mark Twain-inspired tale of a young boy searching to find life's meaning.

The film was in many ways a conventional piece of southern U.S. filmmaking ? with snake bites, shoot outs, a happy ending and even southern-born Reese Witherspoon, as a leg-baring love interest.

It features stellar performances from 15-year-old Tye Sheridan ? who starred in last year's "The Tree of Life" ? and Matthew McConaughey, who wowed critics with one of the festival's best performances.

Along with "Lawless" and "The Paperboy," "Mud" can be added to the list of southern U.S. films that have graced this year's festival.

Nichols joked: "Well? Southerners are good story-tellers."

Non-profit agencies certainly ?

Non-profit agencies certainly help a lot work-whether bringing up money for sick youngsters or finding happy homes for abandoned wildlife. In order to join the paid ranks of them who work for non-profits, step one would be to put together the resume that will enable you to get noticed as well as, ultimately, chosen.

Remember that to start with, a new non-profit organization is actually a business. You may be signing up to the agency because of the cute young puppies on its publicity components, but their career is stay in the particular black. It means they should ingest more money compared to they spend on their particular mission.

Your prospective job is undoubtedly relevant to that: making publicity, executing thriving events, donor contact, and so on

A lot of, if not most of, non-profits solution to a board regarding directors-much like a private-sector company solutions to it has the stockholders. Confident, the work you are at the non-profit is normally more altruistic as compared to most other companies, but the bottom line is the same: you must produce effects for your organization to remain its function.

So what does this really mean for your curriculum vitae? It?s essential which you include and also the how you?ve made results in yesteryear. Your results-driven experience might include the time period you helped the PTA raise $500 by means of candy sales, however pointing out the actual outcome you achieved-?By concentrating the kids on specific goals, I helped them increase their counts over the previous year or so by nearly 12-15 percent?-makes it relevant.

Other suggestions for putting together some sort of top-notch resume for any non-profit business:

Most job hunters are told to get rid of anything from their resume which may provoke a prejudice from a prospective employer-past volunteer benefit a particular religion or political ligue, for instance. That?s not necessarily the truth when writing a resume to get a not-for-profit. Should you planned a prosperous fundraiser for your church and you wish to be a celebration planner for that non-profit, potential employers are likely to look into the idea that you carried off of an event successfully-not place your religious desire.

This might sound like an immediate contradiction with the previous hint, but simply because you?re applying at a non-profit company, you don?t have to incorporate every volunteer activity might ever done. While it?s good to demonstrate you have a giving spirit, the business probably isn?t wanting to hire someone dependent solely on how several hours a week that they stuff envelopes in the Save the actual Raccoon Floor.

In addition reason non-profit institutions are able to carry on their good work happens because someone is running the business. Sure, the business. Take whichever business experience you actually have-whether that?s balancing the books at a splendor shop or acting as your fraternity?s treasurer, and also spin it into how your experience might help the organization?s the main thing.

Non-profits must do plenty with relatively few resources. They?re trying to find someone who could accomplish string quartet la great things-or at least successfully fulfill their whole job description-without lots of material help. Include in your resume how you might have been innovative on the project to the past.

Just like the ?do even more with less? mentality pervasive in most non-profit firms is the hard-and-fast guideline that things are going to make a mistake, generally in the last minute. After you?ve spent months assembling a charity occasion featuring a four-piece string quartet, that square is going to drop with the influenza the day before and also have to cancel. For you personally, canceling the wedding won?t be a choice. Alternatively, you will need to remain versatile. Detail how your own past flexibility triggered a great end result.

Non-profits are always looking for individuals who is able to do double-duty. If you are applying for a executive position but have experience teaching laptop or computer skills, like don?t go away that out as you think doable relevant to the position. What you may can bring to the agency that will save you them money they might instead invest in their services might put you head as well as shoulders above your competition.

The last tip about looking to secure a posture in the non-profit world is always to take a possibility. Charitable work is best suited for someone with a wide range of energy and love for the cause, and a intelligent hiring manager knows that a go-get-?em mindset makes up for deficiencies in specific encounter every time. Therefore don?t be afraid to send in your freshly crafted resume, even when you don?t satisfy some of the standards. Your passion might easily enable you to an interview, and after that the rest is up to anyone!

(AP) ? Gruesome video Saturday showed rows of dead Syrian children lying in a mosque in bloody shorts and T-shirts with gaping head wounds, haunting images of what activists called one of the deadliest regime attacks yet in Syria's 14-month-old uprising.

The assault on Houla, a group of villages northwest of the central city of Homs, killed more than 90 people, including at least 32 children under the age of 10, the head of the U.N. observer team in Syria said.

The attacks sparked outrage among international leaders, anti-regime groups and large protests in Syria, including the suburbs of the capital of Damascus and its largest city, Aleppo. It also renewed fears of the relevance of a month-old international peace plan that has not stopped almost daily violence.

More than a dozen amateur videos posted online Saturday gave glimpses of the carnage, showing lines of bodies laid out in simple rooms, many with bloody faces, torsos and limbs. In some places, residents put hunks of ice on the bodies to preserve them until burial.

One two-minute video shows at least a dozen children lined up shoulder to shoulder on a checkered blanket on what appears to be the floor of a mosque. Blood trickled from one girl's mouth. One boy, appearing to be no more than 8, had his jaw blown off. The video shows flowered blankets and rugs covering several rows of other bodies.

Another video posted Saturday showed a mass grave, four bodies wide and dozens of meters (yards) long.

Activists from Houla said Saturday that regime forces peppered the area with mortars after large demonstrations against the regime of President Bashar Assad the day before. That evening, they said, pro-regime fighters known as shabiha stormed the villages, gunning down men in the streets and stabbing women and children in their homes.

A local activist reached via Skype said regime forces fired shells at Houla, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of Homs. The shabiha entered the villages, raiding homes and shooting at civilians, Abu Yazan said. More than 100 people were killed, more than 40 of them children and most of them in the village of Taldaw, he said. Many had stab wounds, another activist said.

"They killed entire families, from parents on down to children, but they focused on the children," Yazan said.

The Syrian government blamed the killings on "armed terrorist groups" ? a term it often uses for the opposition ? but provided no details or death toll.

U.N. observers, among more than 250 who were dispatched in recent weeks to salvage the cease-fire plan, visited the site of the killings Saturday, finding spent artillery tank shells. The head of the team. Maj. Gen. Robert Mood, called the attack a "brutal tragedy."

"Whoever started, whoever responded, and whoever carried out this deplorable act of violence, should be held responsible."

The attack is yet another blow to the international peace plan brokered by envoy Kofi Annan and cast a pall over his coming visit to check on the plan's progress. The cease-fire between forces loyal to the regime of Assad and rebels seeking to topple it was supposed to start on April 12 but has never really taken hold, with new killings every day.

The U.N. put the death toll weeks ago at more than 9,000. Hundreds have been killed since.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Friday that there has only been "small progress" on implementing the peace plan and blamed the Syrian government for much of the "unacceptable levels of violence and abuses." Annan is supposed to visit Syria soon to check on the plan's progress.

The grisly images sparked outage both from anti-regime groups and political leaders around the world.

"With these new crimes, this murderous regime pushes Syria further into horror and threatens regional stability," French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said in a statement Saturday.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights released an unusually harsh statement, saying Arab nations and the international community were "partners" in the killing "because of their silence about the massacres that the Syrian regime has committed."

The Houla villages are Sunni Muslim. The forces came from an arc of nearby villages populated by Alawites, members of the offshoot of Shiite Islam to which Assad belongs, the activists said.

The activists said the Houla killings appeared to be sectarian between the two groups, raising fears that Syria's uprising, which started in March 2011 with protests calling for political reform, is edging closer to the type of war that tore apart Syria's eastern neighbor, Iraq.

"I don't like to talk about sectarianism, but it was clear that this was sectarian hatred," said activist Abu Walid.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 96 people were killed, 26 of them children and four of them army defectors.

The group's head, Rami Abdul-Rahman, who relies on activists inside Syria, said all were killed in shelling, but that no forces entered Houla.

Syrian state TV condemned the opposition groups for the "massacre" in a statement Saturday.

"The armed groups are escalating their massacres against the Syrian people only days before international envoy Kofi Annan's visit in a bid to defeat his plan and a political solution to the crisis and with the aim of exploiting the blood of Syrians in the media bazar," it said.

The videos could not be independently verified. The Syrian government bars most media from operating inside the country.

The harsh condemnation from anti-regime groups reflects their growing frustration with international reluctance to intervene in Syria's conflict.

World powers have fallen in behind the U.N. plan. The U.S. and European nations say they will not intervene militarily, and while Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Libya have said they will arm Syria's rebels, no country is known to be doing so.

A spokeswoman for the opposition Syrian National Council called on the U.N. Security Council "to examine the situation in Houla and to determine the responsibility of the United Nations in the face of such mass killings, expulsions and forced migration from entire neighborhoods."

Also Saturday, the story of 11 Lebanese Shiites who were reported kidnapped in Syria this week took another strange turn.

Lebanese officials first said their expected arrival on a plane from Turkey to Lebanon late Friday was delayed for "logistical reasons."

On Saturday, Turkey's Foreign Ministry denied the men were in Turkey ? raising new questions about their fate.

Lebanese and Syrian officials blamed Syrian rebels for Tuesday's kidnapping. No group has claimed responsibility.

Valuable Ideas On Successful Programs Throughout Phoenix ...

We have seen there may be an excellent level of confusion in regards to secured debts. It really is understandable, really. Every time you enter right into a monetary agreement ? purchasing a property, securing an auto bank loan, implementing for credit history cards ? you can find pages and pages of information spelling out the phrases on the agreement. Sadly, these are usually written in size two font and contractual language. My eyes damage just serious about it.

I think it can be close to difficult for clientele to be aware of what is heading to materialize with their loan in individual bankruptcy, when they tend not to comprehend the original terms of their contract. It is actually no ponder Phoenix bankruptcy lawyer customers that occur to me looking to erase a credit card debt in bankruptcy (say a home finance loan or auto loan) while not having to switch over the residence securing it. Shame on you, bank loan corporations, for not which include client education and learning as component of your personal loan terms and conditions.

Just before we get way too deep into this conversation, allow me to initially give a short introduction to secured debts. A secured credit card debt is just one through which the creditor has rights during the security (believe collateral home ? one thing that the creditor will take from the function of default) and towards the debtor during the type of particular liability (believe lawsuit ? the creditor can file suit in opposition to a personal that defaults on the financial loan).

Let?s take into consideration a typical motor vehicle mortgage. These are typically secured loans which means that, if you read previously mentioned, you already know that there?s two ways the creditor is shielded. 1 way is by your own liability toward the loan. When the auto is taken by aliens ? along with your insurance protection won?t go over it ? you are nonetheless accountable for the credit card debt. The second defense is by means of the car itself. During this situation, the safety or the collateral could be the motor vehicle and thus the creditor can repossess the vehicle once the loan is defaulted on.

What constitutes secured credit card debt? Properly, once more it comes right down to that wonderful print. Usually, any vehicles loans or property mortgages you maintain are secured from the related collateral. Nonetheless, this could not be correct for private financial loans that you simply just happened to work with to acquire your own home or car or truck. Get in which I?m going with this? In more, most credit score card debt is unsecured. Nevertheless, even this is simply not black and white ? a particular huge box electronics shop is very very good at declaring debt accrued on retail store credit score cards is secured with the residence acquired.

How are these secured loans dealt with in bankruptcy? Usually, once you file chapter seven bankruptcy you happen to be eliminating the personal liability linked with your debts. That?s why lenders will not pursue payment from you ? you happen to be off the hook, so to speak. Having said that, liens in opposition to the collateral house pass through bankruptcy unaffected (barring circumstances making it possible for lien avoidance or stripping).

What does this suggest? The secured creditor can not come after you ? nonetheless they can and definately will arrive immediately after the property. What possibilities would you have? Based on the individual bankruptcy code, there are actually 3 solutions for dealing with secured personal debt in personal bankruptcy:

Redemption: this means that you simply shell out the secured creditor the present price with the collateral asset within a single hard cash payment. After paid, that asset is yours ? free of charge and crystal clear. The balance with the financial debt is then considered unsecured, and discharged together with your other debts.
Reaffirmation: this is certainly an arrangement to waive the discharge regarding the reaffirmed financial debt and also to pay out the debt according to the initial deal. What this means is that your own liability in direction of that debt will remain right after bankruptcy, that may be devastating if you default to the merchandise down the road.
Surrendering: the collateral renders the financial debt an unsecured debt in personal bankruptcy. Your own liability is discharged in personal bankruptcy. For those who surrender the collateral residence, there isn?t any other avenue for that creditor to go after, regardless of whether the worth in the collateral is less than what was owed.
Be sure to notice that the previously mentioned rationalization would be the Cliff?s Notes edition. No, scratch that. It?s the 3?5 flashcard model. I planned to supply you with all an comprehension of secured debt, to ensure that if you converse to a lawyer you?ll have a much better understanding of your bankruptcy case. There are many complexities that I didn?t deal with nowadays.

As an example, in some instances liens is often avoided or stripped. Under these precise situations, the security is stripped and the financial debt is labeled as unsecured. Two prevalent examples consist of 2nd house loans which have been wholly unsecured by equity during the dwelling and automobile financial loans that exceed the reasonable marketplace value with the automobile.

Want an additional instance? In some cases men and women will pick out against the previously mentioned three options on a secured financial debt, and as a substitute selected to complete practically nothing. This permits own liability to become discharged in bankruptcy. Even so, although you remain existing about the bank loan, the creditor still might choose the property beneath the stance that filing bankruptcy alone is contractual default.

As you can see, it is actually complicated. I recommend you get hold of an experienced bankruptcy law firm for any consultation ahead of generating any selections about your situation. Speak about coincidence, I?m a qualified personal bankruptcy lawyer and that i do offer you no cost consultations relating to your bankruptcy scenario. So, in case you have problems pertaining to your secured financial debt, get into my office right now.

APNewsBreak: 22 states join campaign finance fight

HELENA, Mont. (AP) ? Twenty-two states and the District of Columbia are backing Montana in its fight to prevent the U.S. Supreme Court's 2010 Citizens United decision from being used to strike down state laws restricting corporate campaign spending.

The states led by New York are asking the high court to preserve Montana's state-level regulations on corporate political expenditures, according to a copy of a brief written by New York's attorney general's office and obtained by The Associated Press. The brief will be publicly released Monday.

The Supreme Court is being asked to reverse a state court's decision to uphold the Montana law. Virginia-based American Tradition Partnership is asking the nation's high court to rule without a hearing because the group says the state law conflicts directly with the Citizens United decision that removed the federal ban on corporate campaign spending.

The Supreme Court has blocked the Montana law until it can look at the case.

The Montana case has prompted critics to hope the court will reverse itself on the controversial Citizens United ruling. The 22 states and D.C. say the Montana law is sharply different from the federal issues in the Citizens United case, so the ruling shouldn't apply to Montana's or other state laws regulating corporate campaign spending.

But the states also said they would support a Supreme Court decision to reconsider portions of the Citizens United ruling either in a future case or in the Montana case, if the justices decide to take it on.

Legal observers say don't count on the Supreme Court reconsidering its decision.

"It is highly unlikely that the Court would reverse its decision in Citizens United," said law professor Richard L. Hasen of the University of California-Irvine.

At best, the court would listen to arguments and might agree a clarification is needed to allow the Montana law to stand. But even that is a long shot, Hasen said.

Montana Attorney General Steve Bullock argues that political corruption in the Copper King era led to the state ban on corporate campaign spending. A clarification of Citizens United is needed to make clear that states can block certain political spending in the interest of limiting corruption, he said.

American Tradition Partnership argues that the state bans unfairly restrict the ability of corporations to engage in the political process that also affects them.

Bullock wrote in a brief to be released Monday that the state does not "ban" corporate political speech, rather, it regulates that speech by requiring the formation of political action committees.

The Democrat, who is running for governor, said the upstart political corporations hoping to take advantage of unfettered spending are merely "an anonymous conduit of unaccountable campaign spending."

Montana and the other states are asking the court to either let the Montana Supreme Court decision stand or to hold a full hearing. They argue laws like the one in Montana that bans political spending straight from corporate treasuries are needed to prevent corruption.

The other states, many with their own type of restrictions hanging in the balance, argue local restrictions are far different than the federal ban the court decided unconstitutionally restricted free speech. Further, state elections are at much greater risk than federal elections of being dominated by corporate money, requiring tailored regulation, the states' court filing says.

"The federal law struck down in Citizens United applied only to elections for President and U.S. Congress," New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman wrote on behalf of the states. "By contrast, Montana's law applies to a wide range of state and local offices, including judgeships and law enforcement positions such as sheriff and county prosecutor."

The joining states, unlike Montana, ask the court to go further and reconsider core findings in Citizens United. They argue, for instance, it was wrong for the court to say unlimited independent expenditures rarely cause corruption or the appearance of corruption.

And other critics of the Citizens United decision who believe the court was wrong to grant corporations constitutional rights, have intervened and asked the court to reverse itself.

"There is a growing bipartisan consensus that Citizens United needs to be overturned, and Montana is leading the way," said Peter Schurman, spokesman for a group called Free Speech For People. "The Supreme Court has an opportunity to revisit Citizens United here. That is important because there is evidence everywhere that unlimited spending in our elections creates both corruption and the appearance for corruption."

On Friday, Montana's case was given a boost when U.S. Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Sheldon Whitehouse, D-D-R.I., signed on in support. The senators argue evidence following the Citizens United decision, where millions in unregulated money has poured into presidential elections, shows that large independent expenditures can lead to corruption.

The states who filed the brief in support of Montana are New York, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Prenatal pollution exposure dangerous for children with asthma

ScienceDaily (May 20, 2012) ? The link between prenatal exposure to air pollution and childhood lung growth and respiratory ailments has been established by several studies in recent years, and now a new study suggests that these prenatal exposures can be especially serious for children with asthma.

The study will be presented at the ATS 2012 International Conference in San Francisco. "In this study, we found that prenatal exposures to airborne particles and the pollutant nitrogen dioxide adversely affect pulmonary function growth among asthmatic children between 6 and 15 years of age," said study lead author Amy Padula, PhD, post-doctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. "This analysis adds to the evidence that maternal exposure to ambient air pollutants can have persistent effects on lung function development in children with asthma."

The study was conducted as part of the Fresno Asthmatic Children's Environment Study (FACES) -- Lifetime Exposure initiative, which examines the influence of prenatal exposure to a number of ambient air pollutants on the growth of lung function during childhood and teen years in a high pollution area.

For this analysis, the researchers included repeated evaluations of 162 asthmatic children between the ages of 6 and 15 and their mothers. To determine prenatal exposure levels to pollution, the mothers' residences during pregnancy were geocoded and pollutant concentrations were obtained from the Aerometric Information Retrieval System supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).Monthly average pollutant concentrations were assigned from 24-hour averages obtained at a central site monitor and summaries of the entire pregnancy and each trimester were calculated. The researchers looked at several pollutants, including carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone and particulate matter.

To calculate lung function growth, which is determined primarily by changes in lung capacity as a child grows, the researchers used spirometry, a technique which measures the volume and speed of air as it is exhaled from the lungs. For this study, multiple lung function tests were performed and significant changes were noted in four measurements: the FVC, or forced vital capacity, which reflects the volume of air that can be blown out after fully inhaling; the FEV1, or forced expiratory volume in 1 second, which is the volume of air that can forcibly be blown out in one second, after fully inhaling; the FEF, or forced expiratory flow, which reflects the flow of air coming out of the lungs during the middle portion of a forced exhalation; and the PEF, or peak expiratory flow, which is the maximal flow achieved when air is forcibly exhaled immediately after being inhaled.

Measurement models were performed separately for boys and for girls, and were adjusted for height, age, race and socioeconomic status.

At the conclusion of the study, the researchers found that exposure to nitrogen dioxideduring the first and second trimesters was associated with lower pulmonary function growth in both girls and boys in childhood. Among girls, exposure to nitrogen dioxide during the first trimester was associated with lower FEV1 growth and exposure to nitrogen dioxideduring the second trimester was associated with lower FEF growth. Among boys, nitrogen dioxide exposure during the first and second trimesters of pregnancy was associated with lower FVC growth. Exposure to particulate matter during the first trimester was associated with lower FEV1 and FVC growth in girls; similar exposures during the third trimester were associated with lower PEF and FEF growth among boys.

"This finding adds to the evidence that current air pollution levels continue to have adverse effects on human health," Dr. Padula said. "Few studies have examined prenatal exposure to air pollution and subsequent lung function in childhood. These results suggest that we need to be doing a better job to reduce traffic-related air pollution.

Dr. Padula said she and her colleagues hope to conduct future studies on the role of genetic susceptibility to air pollution.

"Currently, our studies are examining the associations between prenatal air pollution and adverse birth outcomes," she noted. "It would be useful to know what makes some people more or less susceptible to the adverse affects of air pollution so we might be able to provide more targeted public health advice."
