The mobster who was portrayed as the main character in Academy Award-winning film ?Goodfellas? has died at 69.

Henry Hill died in a hospital Tuesday of complications from heart problems related to smoking, his girlfriend, Lisa Caserta, told celebrity gossip website TMZ.

?He had been sick for a long time ? his heart gave out,? she was quoted as saying. Caserta also told CBS News that he ?went out pretty peacefully? compared with others involved in organized crime.

\>"); Hill was portrayed famously by Ray Liotta in the 1990 film ?Goodfellas,? directed by Martin Scorsese, and was the subject of a 1986 book, ?Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family,? by Nicholas Pileggi. Hill went to Pileggi after he became an informant for the FBI.

?He was a full-time working racketeer, an articulate hoodlum from organized crime,? Pileggi wrote in the book, according to The Associated Press. The book was later adapted to become the Scorsese film.

Hill, who was born in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Brownsville in 1943 and who grew up in neighboring East New York, is survived by two children.
