Total Vibration ? Blog Archive ? Several Ways To Get Your Financial ...

Finances can be scary, but money is a daily essential. This article contains advice which will help you to regain control of your finances.

Plan your budget based on what you spend vs. how much you make. It is important to figure out your income after taxes. Make sure you include all forms of income that you receive, whether they are from rental properties or a second job. Your expenses should be less than your income.

After that, you need to write down all of your household expenses in list form. Take the time to include everything, such as car maintenance, food costs and amounts you spend when you head out for a night. Make sure that this list reflects all of the money you spend.

Be sure to use real numbers when making a budget. You will find that you have unneeded expenses that you can probably eliminate. Simple things like bringing your own coffee from home can make a huge difference.

To decrease your utility bills, upgrade the systems that you are using. You can cut the cost of your power bill by updating your windows or replacing your hot water heater. A hot water heater can also make a difference in your bill. To lower a water bill, check for any leaky pipes, and have a plumber come out and fix any that you find. Be sure to only use your dishwasher when it is full.

Swap old, inefficient appliances for those that use less energy. This may seem costly, but it saves money over time. Unplug the electrical cords from any appliances or electronics that are not being used. Over time, you will see a difference in utility costs.

To make sure that you are not losing heat because of your roof or insulation, upgrade these areas, especially if this is something that you have not done in a long time. You will definitely get a return for your investment with this upgrade.

When you use these tips, you will be able to cut down on your expenses and save more money. Spend the money you have saved on home improvement projects on new appliances you need. You will be able to live more comfortably and make better plans for the future.

At Bain, Romney Shopped For a Factory in China Where Young Women Worked Behind Barbed Wire for a Pittance (video)

By Imani Gandy (ABL) August 24th, 2012

UPDATE: I am trying to track down more information about the source and legitimacy of this video. Until I figure it out, I am deleting it.

UPDATE 2: I cannot verify the source, but I?ll post it anyway with a less inflammatory title. It certainly sounds like him. It was uploaded to a fake YouTube account. The uploader claims to be Rachel Maddow. Rachel Maddow tweeted that she didn?t upload it.

UPDATE 3: Ok, you all are right. Deleted with apologies to Maddow.

rawhead rex

I sit before you with a migraine, angry, writing this piece. Ahem. I remember checking out some graphic novels at a local Hastings store when I was a kid. One by Clive Barker in particular caught my. It was called Rawhead Rex and at the time, it was one of the most violent and shocking graphic novels I had seen. I was young and comics to me meant something like X-Men and Batman, but this? this was a whole other beast. Gore and foul language filled each page as Rex devoured villagers and children. I remember being stunned that he was totally nude and reminded me of the Alien from? well, Alien. Shortly thereafter, my brother and I saw the VHS at the same store. We were totally shocked this was made into a movie. How could the censors allow such a thing? We had to see it so we rented it immediately.

rawhead rexRemember that one Christmas as a kid where you asked for Top Gun on Nintendo, but instead you got the Top Gun Tiger Electronics Game?

Yeah, so there is this guy Howard Hallenbeck who is on holiday with his wife and two kids in Ireland to research some religious doo-dads for a book he?s writing. What a convenient set up for him. So where does Rex come in? A couple of farmers are trying to remove a phallic like structure (wouldn?t be a Clive Barker movie without one) and eventually it gets struck by lightning and BOOM! Instant demon!

Now here?s where it gets disappointing as I previously mentioned. It didn?t take the movie too long to get to this point.

Rex is? nothing like he looks like in the book. In the book, he was described as a nine foot tall phallus with teeth (?yup). And how does he look in the movie? He looks like Kane Hodder in a goofy Halloween mask with those blinking red LED lights and an S & M suit. And just like I did when I saw this as a kid, my face froze in a state of shock. I didn?t know if I should laugh or be angry. So I did both.

With Rex?s arrival, an alter at the local church becomes hot like a stove and a priest or deacon or whatever religious status he has by the name of Declan O?Brien touches it and sees visions of Rex and all his chaos. This blows his mind and he goes bonkers. Although I think it was unintentional, this guy becomes something of the comic relief character.

rawhead rexNot much to comment on anymore. Rex runs around eating people, one being Howard?s son, which was graphic in the comic, but here it?s only implied through edits. Sigh. Rex lazily slashes at people as what looks like ketchup is slapped on as special effects and people fall down and die. So by now, you?re just waiting for the movie to be over, but luckily O?Brien offers some of the funniest dialogue, with odd combinations of swearing at the top of his lungs and cackling like a madman. Best part of the film is when Rex ?baptizes? him by peeing all over O?Brien and he laughs like an idiot the entire time. I think I rewound this part like eight or nine times.

Finally your wish comes true and the movie draws to a close. Howard finds some relic that can kill Rex, but *choke* *gasp* it doesn?t work! Then his wife comes from out of nowhere and apparently, it had to be the power of a female to kill Rex. This could have worked? if they didn?t set this plot device up in the final ten seconds! Seriously, you could have built up to it. I know, they probably wanted to give the female character something to do instead of just being in the background, but that?s all she was up until this point! So they kill him, some kid puts flowers on a grave and Rex?s emerges from the ground and roars, as if this movie merited a sequel.

Come to think of it, in the graphic novel, I believe the villagers got together and pillaged him. That would have been way better. I also heard rumors of a remake a few years back, but nothing since. Clive Barker was wise to discredit this movie. Boo.

Breivik sentencing: live report

0901 GMT: An expert psychiatrist monitoring the Breivik case for various media says the verdict is "right".

"Breivik showed a high degree of consistency during his detention," says Kjersti Narud, speaking to Norwegian news agency NTB.

"He seemed organised and relatively coherent.

"I can't rule out that he might have been suffering from psychosis at the time of the attacks, but if he was, it could not have been extreme enough to exempt him from criminal responsibility."

0900 GMT: Judge Arne Lyng has just read out the names of the Oslo victims. This is followed by a short break in court proceedings.

0852 GMT: Utoeya survivor Adrian Pracon, a young man in his early twenties who was shot in the shoulder, tweets in Norwegian: "Snipp snapp snute, du er ute" -- a phrase that can be roughly translated as "Abracadabra -- you disappear".

0850 GMT: Breivik used meditation to numb his emotions ahead of the attacks, says the judge.

0848 GMT: It is pure chance that the bomb blast in Oslo did not claim more lives, says the judge.

Eight people died in the explosion of Breivik's home-made bomb, before he shot dead another 69 on Utoeya.

0846 GMT: In court, the judge has moved on to detailing how Breivik carried out his crimes -- currently, she is setting out how he planted a bomb in Oslo.

Breivik plays mechanically with his pen as he listens.

The pen is a special flexible one in order that it can't be used as a weapon. But ordinary pens belonging to his lawyers lie right beside Breivik on the desk, says our reporter Pierre-Henry Deshayes.

0843 GMT: Former justice minister Knut Storberget, who was in office at the time of Breivik's killings, welcomes the sentence.

"This is a good basis for the guilty man to stay in jail for the rest of his life," Storberget tells TV2.

"It's the longest sentence he could have received."

0840 GMT: Norwegian journalist Asne Seierstad, best known outside Norway for her book "The Bookseller of Kabul", writes in Britain's New Statesman magazine that Breivik has continued to communicate with other extremists during his pre-trial detention.

She says he may retain this right to communication as long as he doesn't overtly promote anything criminal, and questions the system which allows him a platform.

"Most of the surviving victims see the harshest punishment for him as isolation," Seierstad writes.

"They hope that someone will take away his computer, restrict his letter-writing and leave him alone in his cell with his thoughts and his guilt."

0824 GMT: On Twitter, many outside Norway are saying the 21-year sentence isn't enough.

But if Breivik is still considered a threat to society after 21 years, he can be held indefinitely.

0830 GMT: The wider Norwegian public, left in shock after Breivik's killings, seems to echo that reaction: on the website of the Norwegian daily Aftenposten, "relieved" is a word that pops up again and again in user comments on the verdict.

0827 GMT: Relief from another survivor, Ingrid Nymoen, who tweets that the ordeal is "finally over. Life can now begin."

0825 GMT: Breivik had purported to belong to a militant group called the Knights Templar, but the judge says: "The court has found no evidence for the existence of the Knights Templar."

0824 GMT: The judge, Wenche Elizabeth Arntzen, is running through Breivik's history, including his period of intensive computer gaming and his moves towards extremism.

0821 GMT: Another survivor, Viljar Hanssen, who was shot in the head during Breivik's rampage, tweets: "Finished. Endpoint."

This is likely a reference to the fact that Breivik is seen as unlikely to appeal, given the verdict. He had said he would appeal if sentenced to psychiatric care.

0819 GMT: Emma Martinovic, a survivor of the Utoeya massacre, tweets: "JAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!" -- or in English, "YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!"

0817 GMT: The minimum sentence is 10 years, which means Breivik will be unable to apply for parole before that.

0816 GMT: Oddly, this judgement is likely to satisfy Breivik -- who wanted to be jailed rather than placed in psychiatric care -- as well as most of his victims' families and the Norwegian public.

0814 GMT: The judge is now reading out the grounds for the ruling.

It is expected that the remainder of today's court proceedings could take up to six hours.

Breivik himself wants to address the court, his lawyers have said, but it is not clear if he will be allowed to speak.

"He thought about what he wanted to say to the judges and so has prepared a few lines for every outcome," Breivik's lawyer Geir Lippestad told the daily newspaper Aftenposten Wednesday.

0808 GMT: The ruling is unanimous, says AFP's Pierre-Henry Deshayes who is in the courtroom.

Breivik listened with a smile on his face as judge Wenche Elizabeth Artnzen spoke.

0806 GMT: BREIVIK GETS 21-YEAR JAIL TERM, SUBJECT TO EXTENSION

0804 GMT: BREIVIK MAKES FAR-RIGHT SALUTE AFTER HANDCUFFS RELEASED

0802 GMT: The five judges have also arrived in the courtroom, as cameras from the many media covering the event flash.

0800 GMT: BREIVIK ARRIVES IN COURT FOR SENTENCING

0759 GMT: More from that survey -- 62 percent of people asked said they thought Breivik should never be released.

0757 GMT: Tabloid Verdens Gang (VG) has published a survey today showing that 72 percent of Norwegians believe Breivik is sane enough to go to prison.

A further 53.6 percent believe that his detention conditions at the moment are too comfortable. His quarters include three small rooms -- one for sleeping, one for exercise and one for work -- and a laptop not connected to the Internet.

WELCOME TO AFP'S LIVE REPORT on Anders Behring Breivik's sentencing hearing.

The key question is whether he will be detained in a jail cell or a mental ward for killing 77 people, many of them teenagers at an island summer camp, in Norway last year.

Far-right extremist Breivik, who has admitted the killings, says he will accept a prison sentence but would appeal against treatment in a closed psychiatric ward.

A first medical assessment found him criminally insane but a second judged him sane. Polls suggest most Norwegians believe he is of sound mind. Now the court will deliver its verdict.

Google expands custom URLs to 'thousands more'

If you're lacking the mental perspicacity to memorize that bizarre string that constitutes your Google+ profile (or business page) we've got some good news -- Google's continuing its roll-out of custom URLs to its most popular social network pages. You'll have to make sure that you stake a claim to your pre-approved URL when the box appears on your page -- fortunately it's pretty hard to miss, sticking out along the top of your well-known profile / page. Lesser known brands and 'personalities' will have to wait a little longer, but Product Manager Saurabh Sharma says that the custom URLs will continue to trickle down the system "in the future."

Update: Our freshly customized +Engadget page is now up and running.

?Invisibility cloak? science to bring broadband Internet to everyone, everywhere

1 day

A lightweight, compact antenna made with an exotic ?metamaterial? will soon bring broadband satellite Internet connections to anyone, anywhere with a portable laptop-sized hotspot.

The hotspot is the first product to be offered by Kymeta, a startup launched Tuesday by Intellectual Ventures, a Bellevue, Wash.,- based patent and research company led by former Microsoft chief technology officer Nathan Myhrvold.?

The metamaterial at the heart of the company?s antenna manipulates electromagnetic radiation to point and steer a radio beam so that it stays locked onto a satellite.?

The same type of exotic material is behind efforts to create a Harry Potteresque invisibility cloak by manipulating light waves. The antenna technology works with waves further down the electromagnetic spectrum, Kymeta CEO Vern Fotheringham explained to me Tuesday.

The hotspot will deliver speeds of 10 to 20 megabytes per second, at a data plan price point equivalent to today?s 3G and 4G wireless networks.

?It is a totally different marketplace that hasn?t been able to be exploited,? Fotheringham said.

The marketplace is now available thanks to the metamaterial technology in combination with an expected tenfold increase in satellite broadband capacity by 2015, compared with 2010.

The company expects to have a pre-production prototype in 18 months and the first devices on stores shelves by late 2014 or early 2015.

The device ?can literally be set up by anybody just by aiming the satellite hotspot towards the orbital arc [of the satellite],? Fotheringham said.??And because the technology creates a beam that automatically aligns with the satellite, there is no sophisticated pointing required. Anyone can set one of these things up in a matter of minutes.?

The technology, he added, could be used by traditional satellite Internet service providers such as Dish and HughesNet as well as mobile satellite provider Inmarsat.

The current?technologies behind Dish and HughesNet use fixed parabolic dish antennas, take an average of?about 30 minutes to set up and are not easily transported, Fotheringham said.

The new antenna could make it easier for their customers to get service.

Following the rollout of the portable hotspots, the company aims to sell its technology for use on airplanes, trains, boats and in?other mobile environments.

Updated at 11:15 am PT to reflect target relationship with satellite internet service providers.

Developer battles big-box retail ban in Falmouth ? Business ...

FALMOUTH, Maine ? Two weeks after protesting what he called a ?hastily and arbitrarily conceived? proposed zoning amendment that would prevent big-box retail development along U.S. Route 1, shopping center developer Ben Devine sat down with town councilors to try to work out a compromise.

At the invitation of the Town Council?s Community Development Committee, Devine met with CDC members and town staff on Monday to discuss the amendment?s cap on the size of commercial developments.

On Aug. 7, Devine submitted a letter to councilors and staff urging them to withdraw the amendment, which would limit the footprint of most new or expanded properties to 30,000 square feet.

Devine heads a real estate development firm that is partnering to acquire the Falmouth Shopping Center in the heart of the town?s Route 1 Business District. The deal is pending.

He also owns interests in 20 other New England retail complexes. They include Falmouth Plaza, home of the town?s only big-box store, a Walmart that is now expanding in size from 92,000 to 124,000 square feet.

Devine called the 30,000-square-foot limit ?not workable? and said it would ?kick out a whole viable section of [potential] real estate.? For example, a new medical office might require a ground-floor area of 50,000 to 70,000 square feet, he said.

Removing the footprint cap would attract such tenants, but not open up the shopping center to the kind of development found at the Maine Mall in South Portland, Devine said.

?The bloom is off the rose for big-box development,? he said. ?The reality is [in Falmouth], those companies aren?t coming.?

The CDC has considered larger caps, including one earlier this year that would have limited new single-tenant buildings to a footprint of 90,000 square feet.

Regardless of the exact size, a footprint cap was always part of the zoning changes envisioned for the Route 1 corridor, one CDC member, Councilor Teresa Pierce, said.

The town is considering the changes, as well as infrastructure improvements, in its 10-year attempt to reinvent the district as a pedestrian-friendly ?village? of small shops and mixed-use buildings.

?We?ve been working on [the zoning amendment] for quite a while, and the time for action is now,? Pierce said.

Devine, councilors and town staff pored over a map of the existing shopping center and discussed alternative solutions to the zoning dilemma, including allowing new uses for the former Shaw?s supermarket space and making zoning exceptions for specific development projects.

But such exceptions can be ?hard to navigate,? Devine said, because prospective tenants and lenders would be skeptical of a development whose size was tightly controlled, even with the understanding that exceptions would be made.

?We need flexibility. The Falmouth Shopping Center currently doesn?t have the flexibility to survive,? he said. ?We don?t know what direction the shopping center is going to take.?

Devine repeated a pledge that his firm, Devine Capital, and partner W.P Realty, have no plans to bring a big-box tenant to the shopping center if the sale is completed. But councilors noted that earlier in the meeting he had said adding a 90,000-square-foot tenant would be ?the best thing for the shopping center.?

The CDC chairwoman, Councilor Bonny Rodden, said Devine was ?disingenuous, and saying a lot of different things.?

Still, she said, the CDC is ?willing to continue to talk? with him.

Pierce added, ?At the end of the day, the town wants a plan that works for developers today, but also for the next 50 years.?

Is it Legal to Go Skinny Dipping in the US? | Criminal Law News Now

If you were in Congressman Kevin Yoder's shoes you may be wondering is skinny dipping legal in the area where you live?

The junior lawmaker from Kansas stirred up a bit of controversy when it was reported that he and several of his colleagues took a late night dip in the Sea of Galilee in Israel. Without a swimsuit, it was reported that Yoder decided to go?au naturale?and?took a skinny dip near the religious site. The FBI is now looking into the matter, reports Politico.

To avoid the FBI looking into your swimming habits, it's probably best to know is skinny dipping legal first before stripping down.

In the United States, the laws of skinny dipping typically are covered by public indecency laws in the state, county, or town where you live. For example, California makes it illegal to expose yourself in any public place, or in any place where there are other persons who may be offended or annoyed. So you could be charged with a crime regardless of whether you are on public or private property, so long as someone is offended by your nakedness.

Similar to California, Florida also makes it a crime to expose yourself in public. However, unlike California, the individual must have a lewd or lascivious intent to be charged with a crime. So the happy-go-lucky nudist could potentially avoid a criminal charge in Florida.

Generally, you'll have to check the local laws in your area to answer is skinny dipping legal where you live. In the meantime, if you find out skinny dipping is illegal, you may want to plan a visit to one of these top cities for skinny dipping in Europe where public nudity laws and enforcement are famously lax.

Why an LTE iPhone will mean the most to Verizon

If Apple ships the next iPhone with support for fast LTE 4G networks, as rumors have suggested for a while, Verizon will be one of the networks that benefits the most. The current iPhone 4S is a mixed bag for Verizon, the slowest iPhone on the fastest network, but the next one won't be, and that will make a huge difference.

It may seem like a distant memory now, but when the iPhone launched in 2007, it was AT&T only in the US. Verizon tried to counter-program it several times, including with the disastrous BlackBerry Storm, before it struck a cord with the bombastic Motorola Droid.

While the Droid sold well, it didn't sell iPhone well, and didn't drive iPhone-level customer interest or retention. Verizon tried again with the litigiously iPhone-like Samsung Facinate (n?e Galaxy S), and again, it sold well, but didn't need it to do what Verizon needed it to do in terms of customer acquisition, retention, or revenue generation.

So in February 2011, Verizon and Apple came to a deal to offer America's most popular phone on America's biggest network, and the Verizon iPhone 4 shipped.

But it wasn't as technologically good as the AT&T/GSM version. Instead of HSPA 7.2mbps speed and simultaneous voice and data, it was stuck on EVDO Rev A ~2.5mbps speed and could only do data when voice wasn't being used. The fragility of AT&T's network, and customer frustration with it, easily counterbalanced any technological inequities, but only for a while.

That's because, at around the same time, Verizon was launching the first LTE network in the US, a network that was well ahead of AT&T. In May of 2011, Verizon debuted the HTC Thunderbolt, their first LTE handset. The speeds weren't stunning by current LTE standards -- roughly 8mbps in Android Central's tests, and battery life was a joke, but Verizon had suddenly become not only the biggest network in the US, but the most advanced.

Yet all they had from Apple was a slow, CMDA iPhone, and since Apple wasn't about to make a gigantic phone with terrible battery life, that was all Verizon was going to get. Even in October of 2011, when Apple launched the iPhone 4S and gave AT&T (and other GSM carriers) HSPA 14.4mbps, Verizon stayed stuck on EVDO Rev A ~2.5mbps.

It didn't really hurt Verizon's sales -- they went on to move an enormous amount of iPhones, but I bet it hurt their pride. They'd spent years and billions building a big network and pushing out next generation technology faster than anyone, and their biggest rival still had a better iPhone. And who knows how many more iPhones they could have sold if they weren't limited by CDMA and EVDO?

Back in May of 2011, I joked that AT&T would invent a 4G iPhone before Apple did by using their BS "HSPA as 4G" marketing to claim they had a 4G iPhone, knowing Verizon couldn't use the same label since their, more proper, "LTE as 4G" wasn't supported yet by Apple.

Low and behold, in March of 2012 AT&T did just that, somehow getting Apple to go along with it to the extent that AT&T, and AT&T alone, got a 4G label plastered on their iPhone status bar.

Verizon didn't stand still. They offered the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and now the Samsung Galaxy S3. But when it came to America's most popular, most profitable single smartphone, America's biggest, most reliable, most advanced network, Verizon, was locked and labeled a generation behind AT&T.

That changes this September. If the rumors of an iPhone 5 with 4G LTE prove true, that changes in a big way. Suddenly Verizon has the fastest iPhone in the most places in the US. The carrier that takes incredible pride in their network can take incredible pride in their iPhone.

And customers who have stayed on AT&T only because of the data speed and simultaneous voice and data, suddenly have a potentially bigger, potentially better option.

The CMDA iPhone was the iPhone Verizon needed, even if it wasn't the iPhone they wanted. The LTE iPhone will be both.

The Mars rover Curiosity zapped a rock scientists are now calling "Coronation" on Sunday (Aug. 19) to test an instrument that measures the composition of targets hit by its powerful laser beam. The rover fired 30 laser pulses in 10 seconds at the fist-size Coronation rock in order to analyze the results.

"We got a great spectrum of Coronation ? lots of signal," said Roger Wiens, lead scientist for the rover's laser-wielding instrument at the Los Almos National Laboratory in New Mexico, in a statement. "Our team is both thrilled and working hard, looking at the results. After eight years building the instrument, it's payoff time!"

Curiosity's Chemical and Camera instrument, or ChemCam, fires laser pulses that last just five one-billionths of a second but deliver more than a million watts of power, enough to turn solid rock into an ionized plasma. A trio of spectrometers in the tool then studies the sparks from the laser fire on 6,144 different wavelengths of ultraviolet, visible and infrared light to determine the composition of the vaporized rock.

?Sunday's laser firing was primarily target practice for Curiosity, but early results suggest the high-tech instrument is working well, mission managers said. Data from the test showed ChemCam is performing even better than in ground tests on Earth, they added.

"It's so rich, we can expect great science from investigating what might be thousands of targets with ChemCam in the next two years," said instrument deputy project scientist Sylvestre Maurice of the Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Plan?tologie (IRAP) in Toulouse, France.

ChemCam is one of 10 instruments packed on Curiosity that rely on the rover's plutonium power source to study Mars. The $2.5 billion rover landed on the Red Planet on Aug. 5 and is expected to explore its Gale Crater landing site for the next two years to determine if the region could have ever supported microbial life.

How Old Is Too Old For Breast Implants? | Sexy Planet

If you?re over the age of 65, do you feel as if you?re aging gracefully? Have you ever wondered if you?re too old to have breast implants? You may be surprised to learn more and more women, who are considered senior adults, have had cosmetic surgery such as implants.

But why in the world would Grandma want to look good? We all know the younger generation, and especially those in their 30?s and 40?s, want to look as young as they can for as long as they can. Well, here?s a shock.

So do grandmas!

It shouldn?t be a surprise to find out the very reasons why young people want to retain their youthful appearance are the same reasons anyone wants to.

So, if you?re over 65, is it too late for you to have cosmetic surgery such as breast implants? Many plastic surgeons say no. Almost 85,000 men and women age 65 and older had some form of cosmetic surgery in the year 2010.

In years gone by, face lifts were the wave of cosmetic surgery. Now it appears more and more older adults have taken a look downward. Many feel as if they don?t know who the person is they?ve become over time. One of the reasons they?re more apt to put themselves through these procedures is simply because seniors are much more active than their predecessors. Plus, with advancements in health care, people are living longer.

Who can blame them for a desire to look good? Many just want to feel as young and good about themselves on the outside as they do on the inside.

But what about the risks of any surgery in the golden years? Some health-care providers don?t feel as if this is an issue. If a person in their 60?s or 70?s have led a healthful lifestyle there doesn?t seem to be any greater risk than for a younger person.

The opposite is true as well. If you?ve led a self-indulgent life with little or no exercise, and you?ve chosen to live upon a life of junk food, you may not be the best candidate.

If you want breast implants the best thing you can do is sit down with a board-certified surgeon and discuss the entire process from beginning to end. An extensive health review of your life will be done and the reasons you want the surgery.

There?s one concern which many psychologists have with regard to seniors who want cosmetic surgery such as breast implants. Will they begin to look at the rest of their body and want much, much more done as they take a hard look at how time has changed them?

When all is said and done, cosmetic surgery may or may not be in the best interest of senior adults. But, they need to feel it?s a possibility if they choose to have it.

(AP) ? Baseball players' union head Michael Weiner is undergoing treatment for a brain tumor.

He began treatment Monday, and the union said Tuesday that treatments are expected to last about one month. The union also anticipates he will continue to work from its New York office on a daily basis during the treatments.

Weiner, 50, succeeded Donald Fehr in December 2009 to become just the fourth head of the union since 1966. He is widely liked and respected among both players and management, and he has been credited for an improved relationship between sides.

"I have great respect and admiration for Michael, with whom we have had a very constructive relationship both professionally and personally," baseball Commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement. "This relationship has been a great benefit to baseball and has led to the tremendous success the game now enjoys. All of us look forward to Michael's full recovery and to his continued contributions to our game."

Following his graduation from Williams College and Harvard Law School, Weiner clerked for a federal judge and was hired by Fehr in 1988 as a union staff lawyer.

Under Weiner's watch, the union signed an agreement in November for a five-year contract running until December 2016, which ensures 21 consecutive years of labor peace in Major League Baseball. The agreement allowed for blood testing for human growth hormone, introduced restraints on bonuses for amateur draft picks and international signings and restored salary arbitration eligibility for part of a class of players that lost it in the 1980s.

The union also succeeded in a grievance overturning a positive drug test against NL MVP Ryan Braun, who avoided a 50-game suspension.

Primary violent space weather concern for next decade: the sun

A new report emphasizes the need for research to better understand the sun, how it interacts with Earth and other bodies in the solar system, and the origins of potentially harmful space weather.

A new report based on input from the science community outlines the most pressing objectives over the next decade for studying the sun and the far-reaching effects of solar activity. The report, which was released yesterday (Aug. 15) by the National Research Council, identifies specific science goals and provides recommendations for how to maintain robust and effective programs despite budgetary constraints.

The study is the council's second decadal survey for?solar and space physics. The committee that wrote the 454-page report, led by Daniel Baker of the University of Colorado in Boulder, pinpointed the top research priorities in heliophysics for the decade spanning 2013 to 2022.

More than 85 scientists and space system engineers contributed to the study, which aims to guide the ongoing and future initiatives of government agencies, including NASA, the National Science Foundation ?and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The report emphasizes the need for research to better understand the sun, how it interacts with Earth and other bodies in the solar system, and the origins of?potentially harmful space weather, said University of Michigan professor Thomas Zurbuchen, vice chairman of the decadal survey.

"We really have a feeling that the next decade is one that really moves us from a decade focusing to understand drivers of space weather to one that is focused on the responses of that," Zurbuchen told reporters in a news briefing in Washington today. [The Sun's Wrath: Worst Solar Storms in History]

The decadal survey's recommendations focus on the types of missions that should be pursued, and how mission planners can keep these endeavors cost-effective without sacrificing their potential scientific return.

The report also suggests establishing a new line of midsize missions ? ones with price tags between $4 million to $9 million ? andencourages cooperation internationally?and between agencies as a way to take advantage of available resources.

"The proposed strategy directed at NSF, NASA, and also NOAA is one that recognizes the increased societal importance of solar and space physics, and how important it is to tackle these new opportunities with a diverse set of tools ?? from miniature satellites like cubesats to moderate and large missions," Zurbuchen said.

The primary scientific goals established by the decadal survey are:

  • To investigate the origins of the?sun's activity?and to study solar variations.
  • To examine the relationship between the sun and Earth by studying variability in Earth's magnetosphere,?ionosphere and atmosphere?in response to solar and terrestrial activity.
  • To understand how the sun interacts with the interstellar medium and other bodies in the solar system.
  • To characterize the processes that occur in the heliosphere and throughout the universe. ?

The report recommends expanding NASA's Heliophysics Explorer program by $70 million per year, which would allow for the launches of more midsize and smaller Explorer missions. These types of initiatives are important, Baker said, because they are more adaptable and nimble than the agency's larger flagship missions and historically provide breakthrough science.

Since the report takes budgetary constraints into account, the committee's recommendations do not require additional funding, but are meant to rebalance the existing costs of various programs.

"To our knowledge, no one has offered us new money right now, so we have to be as creative budgetarily as we can," Baker said.

The survey also suggests ways to foster the development of new technology and to engage the community, such as by investing in science centers or other channels that educate and empower the next generation of scientists,

The decadal survey was sponsored by NASA and the National Science Foundation.

Artificial intelligence allows automated worm sorting

ScienceDaily (Aug. 19, 2012) ? Research into the genetic factors behind certain disease mechanisms, illness progression and response to new drugs is frequently carried out using tiny multi-cellular animals such as nematodes, fruit flies or zebra fish. Often, progress relies on the microscopic visual examination of many individual animals to detect mutants worthy of further study.

Now, scientists have demonstrated an automated system that uses artificial intelligence and cutting-edge image processing to rapidly examine large numbers of individual Caenorhabditis elegans, a species of nematode widely used in biological research. Beyond replacing existing manual examination steps using microfluidics and automated hardware, the system's ability to detect subtle differences from worm-to-worm -- without human intervention -- can identify genetic mutations that might not have been detected otherwise.

By allowing thousands of worms to be examined autonomously in a fraction of the time required for conventional manual screening, the technique could change the way that high throughput genetic screening is carried out using C. elegans.

Details of the research were scheduled to be reported August 19th in the advance online publication of the journal Nature Methods. The research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

"While humans are very good at pattern recognition, computers are much better than humans at detecting subtle differences, such as small changes in the location of dots or slight variations in the brightness of an image," said Hang Lu, the project's lead researcher and an associate professor in the School of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. "This technique found differences that would have been almost impossible to pick out by hand."

Lu's research team is studying genes that affect the formation and development of synapses in the worms, work that could have implications for understanding human brain development. The researchers use a model in which synapses of specific neurons are labeled by a fluorescent protein. Their research involves creating mutations in the genomes of thousands of worms and examining the resulting changes in the synapses. Mutant worms identified in this way are studied further to help understand what genes may have caused the changes in the synapses.

One aspect the researchers are studying is why synapses form in the wrong locations, or are of the wrong sizes or types. The differences between the mutants and the normal or "wild type" worms indicate inappropriate developmental patterns caused by the genetic mutations.

Because of the large number of possible genes involved in these developmental processes, the researchers must examine thousands of worms -- perhaps as many as 100,000 -- to exhaust the search. Lu and her research group had earlier developed a microfluidic "worm sorter" that speeds up the process of examining worms under a microscope, but until now, there were two options for detecting the mutants: a human had to look at each animal, or a simple heuristic algorithm was used to make the sorting decision. Neither option is objective or adaptable to new problems.

Lu's system, an optimized version of earlier work by her group, uses a camera to record three-dimensional images of each worm as it passes through the sorter. The system compares each image set against what it has been taught the "wild type" worms should look like. Worms that are even subtly different from normal can be sorted out for further study.

"We feed the program wild-type images, and it teaches itself to recognize what differentiates the wild type. It uses this information to determine what a mutant type may look like -- which is information we didn't provide to the system -- and sorts the worms based on that," explained Matthew Crane, a graduate student who performed the work. "We don't have to show the computer every possible mutant, and that is very powerful. And the computer never gets bored."

While the system was designed to sort C. elegans for a specific research project, Lu believes the machine learning technology -- which is borrowed from computer science -- could be applied to other areas of biology that use model genetic organisms. The system's hardware and software are currently being used in several other laboratories beyond Georgia Tech.

"Our automated technique can be generalized to anything that relies on detecting a morphometric -- or shape, size or brightness difference," Lu said. "We can apply this to anything that can be detected visually, and we think this could be expanded to studying many other problems related to learning, memory, neuro-degeneration and neural developmental diseases that this worm can be used to model."

Individual C. elegans are less than a millimeter long and thinner than a strand of hair, but have 302 neurons with well-defined synapses. While research using single cells can be simpler to do, studies using the worms are good in vivo models for many important processes relevant to human health.

Other researchers who contributed to this paper include student Jeffrey Stirman from Georgia Tech's interdisciplinary program in bioengineering, Professor James Rehg from Georgia Tech's School of Interactive Computing, and three researchers from the Department of Biology at Stanford University's Howard Hughes Medical Institute: Chan-Yen Ou, Peri Kurshan, and Professor Kang Shen.

The autonomous processing facilitated by the new system could allow researchers to examine more animals more rapidly, potentially opening up areas of study that are not feasible today.

"We are hoping that the technology will really change the approach people can take to this kind of research," said Lu. "We expect that this approach will enable people to do much larger scale experiments that can push the science forward beyond looking what individual mutations are doing in a specific situation."
