Historical pageant sets London Games rolling

LONDON (Reuters) - Children's voices intertwining from the four corners of Britain and a historical pageant of meadows and smokestacks set the 2012 London Olympics rolling on Friday in a ceremony designed to highlight the grandeur and eccentricities of the nation that invented modern sport.

A heavy rain shower threatened to dampen proceedings but cleared just minutes before a spectacle being watched by an audience of 60,000 in the Olympic Stadium and a probable billion television viewers around the globe.

In his final news conference before the Games, International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge paid tribute to the host nation.

"Great Britain was the cradle of modern sport," Rogge said. "You invented modern sport in the second half of the 19th century."

To emphasise the point, Bradley Wiggins, newly crowned as Britain's first winner of the Tour de France and hoping to add more road cycling gold in London, tolled the world's largest tuned bell to signal the start of the ceremony.

More than 10,000 athletes from 204 countries will compete in 26 sports over 17 days of competition in the only city to have staged the modern Games three times.

Rogge, the most important man in world sport, said even he had no idea who would light the Olympic cauldron at the end of an extravaganza choreographed by Oscar-winning film director Danny Boyle.

"I don't know. This is one of the best-kept secrets and we have an arrangement with the organising committee," he said. "We need not know, because the more people know, the bigger the danger of a leak."

ROYAL ROLE

At a reception on Friday, the Queen spelled out the role played by the British royal family after the Olympics were revived in Athens in 1896.

"This will be the third London Olympiad. My great grandfather opened the 1908 Games at White City. My father opened the 1948 Games at Wembley Stadium. And, later this evening, I will take pleasure in declaring open the 2012 London Olympic Games at Stratford in the east of London," she said.

"Over recent months, many in these islands have watched with growing excitement the journey of the Olympic torch around the United Kingdom. As the torch has passed through villages and towns, it has drawn people together as families and communities.

"To me, this spirit of togetherness is a most important part of the Olympic ideal. And the British people can be proud of the part they have played in keeping the spirit alive."

The opening show, costing an estimated 27 million pounds ($42 million), is inspired by William Shakespeare's play "The Tempest", his late-life meditation on age and mortality.

The sound and images of children's choirs singing in the landscapes of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland were beamed into the stadium's giant screens, four different songs woven together into a musical tapestry of Britain.

The ceremony's snapshot of British history started with a depiction of the pastoral idyll mythologized by the romantic poet William Blake as "England's green and pleasant land", degenerating with the Industrial Revolution into "dark Satanic mills".

One of the most spectacular moments brought the audience to a hush. Five giant, incandescent, interlocking Olympic rings, symbolically forged in those steel mills, were lifted out of the stadium by weather balloons, headed for the stratosphere.

The performance will conclude with Britain's greatest contribution to 20th-century popular culture, rock and pop music, celebrated in a performance by former Beatle Paul McCartney.

Until the past few days, media coverage has been dominated by security firm G4S's admission that it could not provide enough guards for Olympic venues. Thousands of extra soldiers had to be deployed at the last minute, despite the company's multi-million-dollar contract from the government.

Counter-terrorism chiefs have played down fears of a major attack on the Games, and Prime Minister David Cameron said that a safe and secure Olympics was his priority.

"This is the biggest security operation in our peacetime history, bar none, and we are leaving nothing to chance."

Suicide attacks on London on July 7, 2005, the day after London was awarded the Games, killed 52 people. This year the Games will mark the 40th anniversary of the 1972 Munich massacre, when 11 Israeli Olympic team members were killed by Palestinian militants.

ARCHERY WORLD RECORD

Although no medals will be awarded until Saturday, the women's football tournament started on Wednesday, and on Friday South Korean archers set the first world records of the Games.

Their three-man team totalled 2,087 points at Lord's Cricket Ground as Im Dong-hyun, who suffers from severe myopia and just aims at "a blob of yellow colour", broke his own 72-arrow world record with a score of 699 out of a possible 720.

The Games' first medals will be decided in the women's 10 metres air rifle final on Saturday, with the big action coming in the men's road race where world champion Mark Cavendish is favourite to become Britain's first gold medallist.

In the evening, Americans Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte are scheduled to line up for a classic confrontation in the men's 400 metres individual medley final.

Phelps, competing in seven events after winning a record eight gold medals four years ago in Beijing, is bidding to become the first swimmer to win gold in the same discipline three times in a row.

"This is going to be a special race," said Gregg Troy, head coach of the American men's team. "I can't imagine a better way to promote our sport than a race like this on the first day."

(AP) ? Chevron's net income fell nearly 7 percent in the second quarter as oil prices and production declined.

The oil giant said Friday it earned $7.21 billion, or $3.66 per share, last quarter. That compared with $7.73 billion, or $3.85, a year earlier. Revenue fell by 9 percent in the quarter to $62.6 billion.

Those results beat Wall Street estimates of $3.23 on revenue of $71.4 billion, according to FactSet. Shares rose by 24 cents to $108.51 in premarket trading.

Chevron Corp., the second-largest U.S. petroleum company behind Exxon Mobil, said production from its global network of oil and natural gas wells fell 2.6 percent in the second quarter. It also sold oil for lower prices in the U.S. and overseas. Natural gas fetched only half as much in the U.S. as it did a year earlier, though gas prices rose internationally.

The fall in production and prices was tempered by a surge in profits at Chevron's refining and marketing operations. Profits rose 80 percent as the company sold about $200 million in assets, including its stake in a South Korean energy business. Chevron's refineries were more profitable because the cost of oil fell and they sold gasoline and other fuels at higher prices on the West coast.

Like many of its peers, the San Ramon, Calif.-based company has increased spending on exploration this year, even though lower oil and gas prices are generating lower returns.

"Despite current weakness in the global economy, we continue to invest in our long-term growth projects to help deliver affordable energy to meet future demand," Chairman and CEO John Watson said.

A slump in oil and natural gas prices also weakened quarterly profits at Exxon Mobil, Royal Dutch Shell, Occidental Petroleum Corp. and ConocoPhillips. BP reports its second-quarter financial results next week.

The tour is part of a campaign called "Get Curious" that was created to honor the new Curiosity Mars rover, the main element of the Mars Science Laboratory mission, which is due to land on our neighboring world Aug. 6. The $2.5 billion rover is designed to spend at least two years on Mars searching for clues that Mars may have been habitable to life at some point.

"Get Curious" will send large boulders manufactured to look like Martian rocks to eight U.S. cities between July 26 and Aug. 9. No rocks have ever been brought back to Earth from the Red Planet, but these large synthetic constructions are designed to resemble the real thing as closely as possible.

The rocks will visit Atlanta; Austin, Texas; Boston; Detroit; Columbus, Ohio; Houston; Indianapolis; and Orlando.

"We are excited that Columbus was designated a 'Mars City,' and that COSI can be a part of the 'Get Curious' campaign," said Joshua Sarver, senior director of experience design and production at the Center of Science and Industry (COSI), the stop location in Columbus, in a statement. "We continually think of ways to captivate our visitors at COSI, and we think the Mars rock in front of the center will attract a lot of attention and pique interest. We are pleased to be able to show our support for the Curiosity rover landing and continue to help raise awareness for scientific discovery and space exploration."

Each ersatz Mars rock will be emblazoned with the URL www.GetCurious.com and a QR code plaque directing people to the campaign's website. The project is sponsored by Explore Mars, a Mars exploration outreach nonprofit, and rocket company United Launch Alliance, which built the Atlas V-541 rocket that launched Curiosity toward Mars in November 2011.

"We at Explore Mars look forward to celebrating the Curiosity landing with not only the space community, but also the general public," said Chris Carberry, executive director of Explore Mars. "This mission will give us insights into whether Mars has, or ever had, conditions favorable to microbial life as well as the possibilities of future human exploration on Mars. We hope this and other space exploration initiatives will inspire Americans of all ages to reach further and dream bigger." [Photos: How Curiosity's Nail-Biting Landing Works]

Syrians flee to "safer" Iraq through reopened border

OUTSIDE AL-QAIM, Iraq (Reuters) - At a bare concrete building on the western edge of Iraq, hundreds of Syrian refugee families wait in the shade, anxious to find out where they will spend the night after fleeing their homeland.

Many of the men, women and children had come from the Syrian town of Albu Kamal and said Syrian rebel forces escorted them on the 7 km (4 miles) road to the main border gate with Iraq.

Albu Kamal was captured by rebel forces last week in a push to seize Syria's international border crossings. Government forces have been trying to wrest back control, firing shells and rockets on the town, they said.

"When we woke up there was shelling. When we went to sleep there was shelling," 34-year-old Jamil Rafea al-Mahmoud said as he waited for Iraqi border control to process his papers.

"I am very upset at leaving my house, my neighborhood, my people, but what can I do? The Syrian people, we do not have anywhere to go but this safer place, Iraq," he said, without a hint of irony.

That Syrians are willing to cross the border despite bomb attacks across Iraq this week shows just how bad the situation back home has become.

Syrian refugees entered the desert border crossing near the western Iraqi town of Al-Qaim on pick-up trucks or on Iraqi government buses as part of a convoy.

They clambered down from vehicles into crowds of shouting soldiers and military trucks, and dragged their bags through the dust. Around 500 Syrians were already waiting at a camp for the refugees at the customs building, in an area surrounded by blast walls and coils of barbed wire.

Syria's 16-month-old uprising has been transformed from an insurgency in remote provinces into a battle for control of the two main cities, Aleppo and Damascus, where fighting broke out last week. President Bashar al-Assad's forces have counter-attacked.

About 50 Iraqi military trucks carrying troops, tanks and guns hurtled towards Al-Qaim on the road from eastern Iraq late on Tuesday to reinforce the border.

"We left Albu Kamal because Bashar's army slit throats and killed my relatives," 49-year-old Nassra Abdul Hallim said, seated with a group of veiled women and children.

"We drove behind the Free Army to the border and they opened the road for us," she said.

Next to her an older woman dressed in black held a limp, pale baby she said was exhausted from the journey.

ATTACKS EVERY DAY

Children slept on the floor or on top of piles of luggage as Red Cresent workers handed out watermelons and drinks in the 45C heat. Iraqi authorities were setting up tents nearby for Syrians that have no relatives to stay with.

"The situation is very, very dangerous in Deir al-Zor, there are attacks every single day," Hussam Mohammed, 34, said, surrounded by his family as children screamed and ran through the crowds of adults.

Syrians in his city, around 140 km (100 miles) from the Iraqi border, fear government forces more than the Free Syrian Army (FSA), he said. Across the border the rebels had painted a large mural of the FSA flag on a building.

"The war is between the two sides. They are shooting at each other and the people are just the victims," Mohammed said.

Fearing a spillover of violence, the Iraqi army sealed the Qaim crossing with concrete blast walls on Friday, trapping Syrians trying to escape attacks on the other side, according to local officials. Iraq's Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki overturned the decision on Monday.

Iraq, whose desert province of Anbar, a Sunni heartland, borders Syria, is nervous about the impact of the conflict in its neighbor where mainly Sunni rebels are fighting to end Assad's Alawite-dominated rule.

Assad describes his foes as foreign-backed terrorists who are responsible for the killings.

The Iraq's Shi'ite-led government said on Monday it rejected Arab League calls for Assad to quit, saying it was for the Syrian people alone to decide his fate and others should not interfere.

A 16-year-old boy at the border, who gave his name as Ali, said he had fled his house in Albu Kamal with his father and four younger brothers after it was struck by shelling. They had tried to run to a neighbor's house.

"When we went outside the shells hit the houses and shrapnel wounded me," he said, lifting up his football T-shirt to show blood-stained bandages across his stomach.

"The shrapnel hit my father on the head and the children were pushed back by the blasts. I fell on top of my father. He was dead," Ali said.

His brothers were being treated in Qaim hospital where doctors have received scores of wounded Syrians, according to local officials. The family will stay in tents provided by the Iraqi government for now, his mother Hayem said.

"It was Assad's army that shelled our house. Assad's groups killed my husband," she said.

Romney seeks independent probe of White House leak

RENO, Nev. (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Tuesday called for an independent investigation into claims the White House had leaked national security information for President Barack Obama's political gain, part of a searing speech that marked a wholesale indictment of the Democrat's foreign policy.

In a race that has so far focused almost entirely on the sluggish economy, Romney also critiqued Obama's handling of Iran's nuclear threat, the violence in Syria and relations with Israel during a speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention.

In his first foreign policy speech since emerging as the likely Republican presidential nominee, Romney accused Obama of putting politics over national security, a serious charge that went straight at a policy area where national polls show the president with the edge.

The turn also was a reminder that the increasingly biting campaign, which paused over the weekend in deference to the deadly movie theater shooting in Colorado, was on again in earnest.

"This conduct is contemptible," Romney said of the leaks of classified information. "It betrays our national interest. It compromises our men and women in the field. And it demands a full and prompt investigation by a special prosecutor, with explanation and consequence."

Attorney General Eric Holder has appointed two federal prosecutors to get to the bottom of the leaks, but Romney suggested that wasn't good enough. The White House has rejected calls for a special prosecutor, saying there is no need for one.

Romney stopped short of accusing Obama specifically of leaking information that includes details of the mission that killed Osama bin Laden last year. He made the charge as he prepared to embark later Tuesday on a trip to Great Britain, Israel and Poland and meetings with a host of foreign leaders.

Obama has strongly rejected the leak accusations that, until Tuesday, had been contained to Republicans in Congress.

During a news conference last month, he called the accusations "offensive" and "wrong."

White House spokesman Jay Carney responded Tuesday by saying Obama "feels extremely strongly about this" and noting Holder's appointment of the two federal prosecutors to investigate.

"The president has made abundantly clear that he has no tolerance for leaks and he thinks leaks are damaging to our national security interests," Carney said.

Reflecting the campaign's recent attention to veterans, Obama added a visit Tuesday with some of them to his fundraising schedule in Portland, Ore.

Obama slid into a blue vinyl booth with three middle-aged veterans who were among the lunchtime crowd at The Gateway Breakfast House. The conversation turned quickly to veterans care, including those who live in rural areas.

Campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said Romney was resorting to "cheap attacks" on the president "that lack credibility."

Romney referenced comments from Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who said Monday that the White House appeared to be behind some leaks of classified information. The California Democrat, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, said she was convinced Obama himself did not didn't leak secret information.

It's been a simmering Republican complaint, quelled little by Holder's action, in response to leaks about the bin Laden raid, as well as U.S. involvement in cyberattacks on Iran and about an al-Qaida plot to bomb a U.S.-bound airliner.

Feinstein said Tuesday she was "disturbed by these leaks."

"I regret that my remarks are being used to impugn President Obama or his commitment to protecting national security secrets," she said in a statement.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor with a business background, has for months aggressively raked Obama's stewardship of the economy. Polls consistently have shown voters see Romney as better able to handle it.

But Romney has been unable to cut into Obama's edge on national security issues. The administration's counterterrorism fight against al-Qaida and especially the killing of bin Laden has undercut the label Republicans have long attached to Democrats as soft on defense.

Romney called for a total cessation of uranium enrichment in Iran, and proposed tying foreign aid to Egypt to peaceful relations between Egypt and Israel.

He called for strict enforcement of sanctions against Iran and pledged to use "every means necessary to protect ourselves and the region."

But the speech was more criticism than proposition.

Romney said Obama had alienated Israel and other key U.S. allies such as Poland and the Czech Republic.

He derided as politically motivated Obama's candid comment to the Russian president that he would have more flexibility to deal with Russia after the election.

Vice President Joe Biden hit Romney for "reflexively" criticizing Obama's policies without offering alternatives.

"When he does venture a position, it's a safe bet that he previously took exactly the opposite position and will probably change his mind again and land in the wrong place ? far out of the mainstream," Biden said in a statement.

Romney also suggested that politics is driving Obama's push for defense cuts and warned the spending reductions would weaken the military. "Strategy is not driving President Obama's massive defense cuts," Romney said.

The automatic, across-the-board cuts of $1.2 trillion to defense and domestic programs are slated to begin on Jan. 2 unless Congress comes up with a plan to avoid them. They were set in motion after a bipartisan congressional "supercommittee" failed to come up with an equivalent amount in cuts.

Republicans have tried to pin the looming defense cuts on Obama, but GOP members in the House and Senate voted for the reductions last August as part of a far-reaching bill that raised the nation's borrowing authority and implemented cuts to reduce the growing federal deficit.

Obama made that point in his speech to the same group on Monday.

"There are a number of Republicans in Congress who don't want you to know that most of them voted for these cuts," Obama said. "Now they're trying to wriggle out of what they agreed to."

It's also a local campaign issue in competitive states such as Virginia and Florida, states with a large military civilian workforce.

But the criticism of Obama on military spending could also help Romney, who faces scrutiny in these states for proposing a 10 percent cut in the federal workforce that would affect military and defense jobs.

A NBC/Wall Street Journal poll published Tuesday showed Obama is seen as a better commander in chief, 45 percent to 35 percent. Last week, a CBS News/New York Times poll found 47 percent of voters said Obama would do a better job handling foreign policy, while 40 percent chose Romney.

Mid-year Irish property review ? NAMA Wine Lake

We now have the main indices for Irish residential and commercial property prices and rents for the first six months of 2012, and it might be helpful to take stock of trends and the outlook for the remainder of the year. The predictions on here for 2012 were published at the end of December here, and are shown below ? marked ?original? ? along with the actual results for 2011, declines from peak to the end of 2011, the mid-year 2012 actual outturn and revised forecast for the full year 2012.

It now seems on here that the decline in residential property will be less than originally predicted and the revised prediction is a 10-15% decline ? the late introduction of the House Price Database and the absence of any detail yet on the new property tax and lower interest rates are contributory reasons for the reduction in the forecast from a 15-20% decline.

The severe reductions in rent assistance by the Department of Social Protection in January 2012 are the main reason for revising residential rent and the revised prediction is a 0-5% decline. The original prediction based on the 2011 trend was a 0-5% increase.

Despite the giveaway budget last December 2012, commercial property has performed worse than expected and the revised prediction is a 5-10% decline. Scarcity of credit and poor European and Irish economies have contributed to the revision from the original 0-5% decline.

The commercial rents prediction remains unchanged at a 0-5% decline. Despite claims of prime rents stabilising, there is an acute oversupply of non-prime property, and this property is being offloaded onto the market dragging rents down.

Main developments in January-June 2012

Europe is still in crisis, for a small exporting nation, we depend on a healthy Europe to support our economic advance. Forecasts of economic growth in the EuroZone and in the UK have been cut, and as I write this today, both Spain and Italy are on the brink of seeking bailouts which are beyond the capacity of the European bailout fund, which is facing a challenge in Ireland?s Supreme Court today and may also be de-railed by German constitutional court challenges, decisions on which are expected at the start of September 2012. For the first six months of this year, Europe has lurched hopelessly from one crisis to the next, with the core problem of sovereign, personal, corporate and banking debt still not being addressed.

Economic forecasts are worse, the Department of Finance forecast for GDP and GNP at the start of this year was 1.3% and 1%, the official forecast for GDP is now 0.7% and although there was no Department of Finance forecast in the April 2012 Stability Propgramme Update, the consensus is that we will have modestly negative GNP this year. GDP and GNP both declined in the first quarter of 2012 by 1.1% and 1.3% respectively. Unemployment is now at a record in this crisis of 14.9% and the job announcement ?spectaculars? have been more than offset by the drip-drip erosion of employment. Construction and retail have suffered in particular, though there have been some bright spots, with Exchequer targets being met, service sector activity growing, exports up in the first quarter and consumer confidence showing signs of stabilisation.

Rent assistance reductions that were announced in January 2012 were more severe than expected on here. The average reduction was 13% with the highest at 29%.

Interest rates are trending downwards ? against expectations on here ? the ECB has reduced its main interest rate by 0.25% from 1% to 0.75% which means that nearly half Ireland?s mortgage borrowers have benefited from immediate reductions to their tracker rates, whilst variable rates have also trended downwards. Having crossed the 1% Rubicon in July, the ECB may again cut rates during the remainder of this year.

Credit availability is more restricted, although we?re still awaiting the mortgage figures for the second quarter of 2012, the results for quarter one were dreadful. Finance for commercial property isn?t any better with Bank of Ireland, and to a lesser extent Barclays being the only lenders of note into the sector. NAMA has committed ?2bn for staple finance which might help (NAMA?s) commercial property prospects going forward.

?

Expected developments in July-December 2012

Property tax, although hard data is suspiciously hard to come by from Phil Hogan?s Department of Environment , Community and Local Government, it seems that 40-50% of households still haven?t paid the ?100 household charge, even four months after the 31st?March 2012 deadline. We can quibble about the level of compliance, but it seems that there has been massive resistance to the new charge. We know that the so-called expert report on the shape of a new property tax to take effect from the start of 2013, has been recently delivered to Cabinet, but we don?t yet have any detail, though there is much anxiety amongst home owners that they may face an average annual charge in 2013 of hundreds of euro if not ?1,000. Given the requirement under the Troika memorandum to raise over ?1bn in new taxes in 2013 and with options on income tax and social welfare rates apparently taken off the table, with VAT and excise taxes already at elevated levels, it is likely that any average new property tax be in the ?300-700 range. Increasing the cost of home ownership should logically mean a reduction in home values.

House Price Database (register), Tom Lynch, the CEO at the Property Services Regulatory Authority says that we will have hard sales price data from September 2012, and we may even get data going back to 2010. In a buyers market, the new register should have the effect of beating down prices because buyers with the upper hand will automatically seek the lowest price based on similar property sales.

Europe, this is the wildcard because on one hand, if the EuroZone decides to abandon the 2% annual inflation target and print more money, then we might see inflation rising which will mean property prices increase. On the other hand, the EuroZone crisis may intensify, undermining growth and leading to further asset depreciation. Or the status quo of a slow brownout may continue. A wildcard.

More NAMA supply, NAMA?s residential property portfolio of 13,000 Irish homes worth about ?2.5bn is not market-moving but it is still significant and at some point these homes will need come on the market if NAMA is to have its loans repaid, NAMA may rent rather than sell for the time being however. NAMA?s commercial portfolio, worth about ?6bn is significant in a market which was worth less than ?0.5bn in 2011. Over supply of vacant commercial property is still a major problem generally, though there are noted shortages in some locations for some types of property. NAMA might prefer to rent rather than sell, but the degree of oversupply is such that we can expect some NAMA property to come onto the market for sale.

Budget 2013, last year?s budget was the most commercial property-friendly budget in (my) living memory, with stamp duty slashed from 6% to 2%, with the abandonment of Upward Only Rent Review reform and capital gains tax incentives. Alas, the experience of the first six months demonstrates that more is needed to get the commercial property market moving. NAMA has a market-moving portfolio of commercial property-related loans and we might assume that Minister Noonan will give NAMA a willing ear for any proposed changes to the tax/regulatory environment. You can probably expect an extension of incentives for residential property also, though of course these will not be announced in advance lest they lead to a deferral of existing purchases.

I?m very much looking forward to my time here in London, both to see my son compete and because my country will play host to the next Olympic Games.?

?It means a great to deal to me to have a base in London,? said Gao Xiuyu, mother to Team China?s Lin Dan. ?It?s my first time here and I like knowing that there?s a place in the city where I can get together with other moms from around the world, because of P&G.?

?I will appreciate having a home-away-from-home where I can relax, meet other families and hear about their experiences,? said Lisbeth Matlou, mother to Team South Africa?s Noko Matlou. ?The P&G Family Home provides me with what I need, so that I can be there for my child, cheering her on as she competes.?

?Every mom knows that encouraging your kids to play sports is not just about raising champions,? said Carol Hoy, mother to Team GB?s Sir Chris Hoy. ?I was proud of Chris when he was a little boy winning the egg-and-spoon race, and I?m proud of him now as an Olympian. Thanks to P&G, I?ll be there to cheer him on in the Velodrome, and visit him in the P&G Family Home.?

To pay tribute to the Moms of the Games, P&G has also created a series of short videos that tell the story of what it takes to Raise an Olympian. More than 60 of these films are available on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZhwZI1wWGU

For Your Internet Business To Achieve Success You'll Need A ...

You may be mystified why you have to have a business blog, if your business is already successful with lots of traffic. If you want to keep your business ticking over happily, or of you want to build it to greater heights, a blog must now form part of your web activity. Keeping your current base of buyers and getting it to grow on an ongoing basis, it is important to have a business blog. If your website is already enjoying success, a business blog could add value to it.

A static web site doesn?t create the feeling that there is someone real somewhere, someone you can actually talk to. People like it when they know there is someone real available who could respond to their questions. There should be more to a web site than the print and the images. A blog enables you to interact with your guests, who can put up questions and comments and get your personal attention, which creates rapport, something you are unable to do on a static website and you can always add LOKI link builder to get more visitors. With all of the social networking around, people like interaction, especially before they consider buying any product. The content on a blog may be updated with all the most recent information, to keep guests fully abreast of issues. It?s possible for your blog to consistently provide the latest and newest information.

Site owners are fully aware that eighty percent of their website traffic comes from the search engines. The best way to obtain relevant traffic is through the search engines. People will find your offerings via their search queries on the major search engines. This is why it is wonderful for driving the kind of visitors you want to your site. The first step in getting onto the search engines is to have your pages indexed, which is much quicker with blog pages than with a static web site.

Blogs have something special, the ping function, which makes it much easier to generate traffic to a blog than a static page. Every time a new post is made, it is pinged, letting the search engines know that completely new content has been put on the site. Spider bots are then directed by the search engines to analyze the material on your blog to find out if it is fresh. If the spiders are satisfied, your brand new content will be indexed and will be shown in the search engine results for queries with the content?s keywords. Then it is merely a matter of getting your web pages to rank high enough so that a lot of people will see them.

Whenever you publish a new article the internal links on your blog are updated accordingly, something that cannot be done with static pages. Static web pages require that you link them by hand, and you also have to make a logical sitemap. You spend valuable time on technical tasks which are carried out as a matter of course with a blog site. If your site is a blog, the energy you waste on a website?s technicalities can be channeled into more productive activities. It is now rapidly drawing near to the stage where you must have a blog for your web based business to achieve success.

With the new Loki Link Builder plugin you can now boost your rankings fast.

(AP) ? The deadly shooting at a movie theater in Colorado has briefly silenced the presidential campaign, prompting both President Barack Obama and likely Republican challenger Mitt Romney to cut short their schedules and pull advertising in the state out of respect for the victims and their families.

Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address that he hopes everyone takes time this weekend "for prayer and reflection ? for the victims of this terrible tragedy, for the people who knew them and loved them, for those who are still struggling to recover."

The president said Americans should also think about "all the victims of the less publicized acts of violence that plague our communities on a daily basis. Let us keep all these Americans in our prayers."

Aides said Obama received updates Saturday from his homeland security adviser, John Brennan, on the investigation into the shooting and the attempts by authorities to gain access to the suspect's apparently booby-trapped apartment.

Obama and Romney used campaign appearances on Friday to focus attention on the need for national unity in the aftermath of the shooting in Aurora, which killed 12 people and wounded dozens of others. Their campaign teams rescheduled Sunday show appearances by top aides and surrogates, essentially providing a break in what has been an increasingly testy campaign.

The rampage injected a new tone into the campaign after Obama and Romney had clashed repeatedly over the economy, Medicare and tax returns.

Obama was set to start his second day of events in Florida when the shooting occurred, prompting his team to address the violence at a previously scheduled rally in Fort Myers, Fla., and scrapping an event in suburban Orlando. Obama told supporters in Fort Myers that the shooting served as a "reminder that life is very fragile."

"Our time here is limited and it is precious. And what matters at the end of the day is not the small things, it's not the trivial things," he said. "Ultimately, it's how we choose to treat one another and how we love one another."

Romney echoed Obama's call for unity, saying at a previously scheduled event in Bow, N.H., that he joined with the president and first lady in offering condolences for those "whose lives were shattered in a few moments, a few moments of evil in Colorado."

"The answer is that we can come together. We will show our fellow citizens the good heart of the America we know and love," Romney said.

Other prominent lawmakers called the shooting a time for unity. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said in the Republican address Saturday that lawmakers joined Obama in offering condolences and prayers to the loved ones of those who were killed and wounded.

"I know that when confronted with evil we cannot comprehend, Americans pull together and embrace our national family more tightly," Boehner said.

Yet, beyond the calls for a higher purpose, the shooting could raise the profile of gun rights in the presidential campaign, an issue which has played a minor role so far.

As a senator Obama voted to leave gun makers and dealers open to civil lawsuits, and as an Illinois state lawmaker he supported a ban on all forms of semiautomatic weapons and tighter state restrictions generally on firearms.

Following the killing of six people and wounding of then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Ariz., in 2011, Obama called for a series of steps to "keep those irresponsible, law-breaking few from getting their hands on a gun in the first place."

Among those steps was a better federal background check system. The administration said Friday that it has indeed improved the amount and quality of information poured into that system, allowing background checks to be more thorough.

But the administration has offered no detailed, public explanation of how it is following up on all of Obama's previous promises, and it had no comment about any need for new legislation.

"The president believes that we need to take common-sense measures that protect Second Amendment rights of Americans, while ensuring that those who should not have guns under existing law do not get them," said White House press secretary Jay Carney.

Romney backed some gun control measures when he was governor of Massachusetts. When he challenged Sen. Edward M. Kennedy in 1994 he declared, "I don't line up with the NRA." In April, Romney told the National Rifle Association he was a guardian of the Second Amendment.

Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said the Republican candidate believes that the "best way to prevent gun violence is to vigorously enforce our laws."

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in a radio interview, urged the president and his challenger to address gun violence forcefully.

"You know, soothing words are nice," Bloomberg said, "but maybe it's time that the two people who want to be president of the United States stand up and tell us what they are going to do about it, because this is obviously a problem across the country."

Venture capitalists say Romney is not one of us

(Reuters) - When staffers at the National Venture Capital Association see a report that refers to U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney's investments as venture capital, they grimace -- and then contact the author to explain politely why it's wrong.

The Republican White House hopeful was head of Bain Capital LLC, which does the bulk of its work in private equity and not venture capital, the NVCA would clarify. Venture capital backs companies from their earliest days, and some go on to create thousands of jobs; private equity typically comes in at later stages to turn around underperforming companies, sometimes via job cuts and other unpopular cost-savings moves.

The distinction has become important as the U.S. election shines a harsh spotlight on the private equity industry, with President Barack Obama's campaign accusing Romney of slashing U.S. jobs at Bain-owned companies and outsourcing them abroad.

While Obama does not muddle venture capital and private equity, many journalists and politicians do. Venture capitalists fear those slips could tarnish their public image and lead to unfriendly tax policies and other regulations down the road.

"People care about what they do and their reputation and what their job is," said investor Yanev Suissa of venture industry giant NEA, which has $13 billion in committed capital. "When you're faced with the attitude that what you do is job-destroying, it's problematic."

It is a delicate balancing act for venture capitalists to defend their own industry without disparaging private equity or castigating the career path of the man who might become president next year. Many venture capitalists believe PE firms ultimately help the economy by making lagging companies more competitive, and many PE executives also invest in venture capital funds.

But with Democrats highlighting companies that went bankrupt or shipped jobs overseas under Bain's ownership, the VC industry is concerned that negative associations could harm its ability to move an ambitious legislative agenda through Washington.

That agenda includes preserving preferential tax treatments like the carried-interest tax break, which allows VC and PE investors to pay tax on investment gains at the long-term capital-gains tax rate, which is just 15 percent, compared with a top income-tax rate of 35 percent.

"In tax policy, you can see the concern there," said Mark Heesen, president of the National Venture Capital Association, which represents over 400 VC firms.

Given an increasingly squeezed federal budget, the capital-gains tax break could be drastically scaled back or eliminated altogether, he said.

While stopping short of saying private equity does not deserve the tax break, Heesen makes it clear he thinks venture capitalists merit special treatment because of the risks they take on investing in start-ups. "We create something from nothing," he said. "We have a much better story to tell."

Venture capitalists are split on which party seems more likely to preserve tax breaks for them. While Republicans are considered the party of business, many Democrats supported the JOBS Act, which makes it easier for young companies to raise money. Heesen said Republicans might feel more pressure to balance the budget and close up anything seen as a loophole.

The NVCA does not donate to presidential campaigns but it does give to congressional races - about $624,000 so far in the 2011-2012 cycle. About $358,000, or 57 percent, has gone to Republicans, according to a spokeswoman. Individual venture capitalists have given $453,550 to the Romney campaign, compared with $402,915 to the Obama campaign, according to the Center for Responsive Politics' Opensecrets.org.

GNASHED TEETH, ROLLED EYES

The venture capital industry has enjoyed some successes in Washington in recent months beyond the JOBS Act, which passed in April. Venture capitalists helped to snuff out controversial Internet legislation that would have affected the business prospects of Web startups. They also fought for streamlined regulations on approving new medical devices, an important venture investment area.

In addition to retaining preferential tax policies, venture capitalists want to make it easier for entrepreneurs to secure U.S. visas and to preserve government funding for basic research that could benefit start-ups.

With these issues on their agenda, it's no wonder venture capitalists do not want to be tarred as job-cutting villains -- they prefer to be thought of as the people behind such American success stories as Apple Inc, Facebook Inc and Google Inc.

References to Romney as a venture capitalist rather than a private-equity executive are "really annoying," said Larry Lenihan, managing partner at FirstMark Capital, whose investments include online bulletin board Pinterest. "I can't stand the laziness of the broader press not to differentiate between the two."

Kate Mitchell of Scale Venture Partners agrees. "It does more than make me gnash my teeth and roll my eyes," she said, adding that she is often in Washington talking to lawmakers or engaging with the media to educate them about the difference between PE and VC. Scale's investments include cloud-storage company Box.

The NVCA says its staffers have reached out to reporters about a dozen times this year to clarify media reports that labeled Romney's private equity activities as venture capital.

A Google search for "Romney and venture capital" yields 9.4 million results, compared with 43.3 million for "Romney and private equity."

The situation is complicated by the fact that while the bulk of Bain Capital's work is in buyouts, the firm did make some venture investments while Romney was there, such as in office-supplies company Staples Inc and childcare company Bright Horizons Family Solutions Inc.

Bain Capital, which employs 900 people, has $60 billion in assets under management worldwide, including $2 billion managed by Bain Capital Ventures. Its first dedicated venture fund, a $250 million fund, launched in 2001; before that, it mixed venture investments in with its private equity investments.

The term "growth equity" is increasingly used by PE firms to describe what they say are investments that sit between the venture capital and mature private equity space.

Private equity executives defend their industry by saying it creates stronger, more profitable companies, which then are in better positions to hire. PE firms also often save troubled companies from failing, and eliminating far more jobs.

They also argue that the stereotype of private equity firms as speculators that just saddle companies with debt is dated by virtue of the financial markets having moderated leverage since the 2008 financial crisis.

But the job-slashing stereotype has allowed politicians to disparage Romney's record. Former Republican presidential rival Rick Perry, for example, repeatedly called Romney a "vulture capitalist" while the primary race was still in full swing earlier this year.

Meanwhile, venture capital might have to start battling as hard for its image in Hollywood as in Washington. A recent episode of the HBO cable television show "Girls," titled "Weirdos Need Girlfriends Too," cast a venture capitalist as the villain.

FNB has launched Facebook Banking, giving customers access to certain banking services over Facebook

FNB says it has launched FNB Facebook banking which will allow users to access certain banking services through the world?s biggest social network.

Users who have an FNB account will be able to access banking through Facebook by linking their facebook profiles to their cellphone banking profile.

Once linked, they can access the ?FNB Banking on facebook? application via Facebook which will allow them to check their balances, purchase prepaid products ? including airtime, SMS and BlackBerry bundles ? as well as the option to view LOTTO and PowerBall results.

FNB?s Social Banking

Early this year, FNB launched a service which allows its customers to purchase vouchers using cellphone banking which can be posted on facebook, hence, Facebook Banking adds to the cellphone banking repertoire.

?As a bank, we average around 15 000 conversations monthly, via social media, with existing and potential customers,? said Ravesh Ramlakan, CEO of FNB Cellphone Banking.

?It is without a doubt that social media banking is the next frontier ? to us this is a channel that will provide our customers with more choice and convenience to do their banking.?

There are currently close to 5 million South Africans on Facebook, and FNB itself has over 153 000 Facebook fans.

Banking on the ?book

FNB?s move follows only two other banks, globally, which have ventured onto using Facebook as a banking platform, or otherwise hinted at the possiblity of adding such a feature.

Indian banking giant, ICICI, has already added Facebook functionality to its services, allowing customers limited banking functionality such as checking account details, getting account statements, upgrading debit card and making cheque book enquiries.

Global banking group, Citi Bank has alluded to following a similar path, guaging its clients over Twitter by asking ?If you could do your banking on Facebook ? Would you??

In response to the bank?s teasing question, followers? reaction quickly turned to the question of security.

Safe and secure?

FNB?s Facebook functionality operates through linking to one?s cellphone banking account; the service does not offer full banking functionality, but does allow customers to buy airtime and vouchers, which does raise the question of security.

Even though banking details are obviously not shared with friends, the app does warn customers to keep their Facebook login details secure and not to share them with anyone.

?Our solution only allows the registered FNB Cellphone Banking customer access to his/her Banking application on Facebook once the customer has linked his/her Facebook profile via FNB Cellphone Banking,? said FNB?s Ravesh Ramlakan.

?This solution leverages off the security for FNB Cellphone Banking and it is not possible for someone else to gain access to the customer?s Facebook Banking application. The only exception is where a customer provides their Facebook credentials to another user.?

?However, even if someone did manage to breach a Facebook account, they can?t transfer funds out of the account, nor can they purchase prepaid products for themselves. In addition, Facebook provides guidelines on how to protect a user Facebook account,? he finished.

Children of undocumented parents face foster care, adoption ...

By Pierre R. Berastain

What happens to children of parents who are caught in the process of deportation?? According to a judge in Missouri, those children go to foster care.? The logic couldn?t make more sense: the parents abandon their children, so the state is in its right to take over.? It is estimated that over 5,100 children are in foster care while their parents face deportation.? It doesn?t matter the parents provided a home for the children, or that the children enjoyed a bed every night and a meal every day.? All that matters is that the parents committed the civil offense of remaining in the country without papers.? It is one thing to enforce the law; it is another to separate families that have done nothing wrong besides seek a better future for themselves, a more comfortable lifestyle for their children, a safer place to call home.

Judge Terminates Detained Mom?s Rights, Allows? Missouri Couple to Adopt
By Jorge Rivas

On Wednesday a Missouri juvenile court judge terminated a Guatemalan woman?s rights to her 5-year-son because they believe she abandoned her child when she was imprisoned after a 2007 immigration sting at a poultry processing plant.

Encarnacion Romero, the mother of the child, cried as she was leaving the courtroom, according to the Joplin Globe. Romero?s attorney say they will appeal the decision.

The case garnered National attention when ABC?s ?Nightline? covered the story in February 2012.
